My family just relocated to St. Louis about a month ago. My husband and almost two-year old son and I love the area. We live in the city (St. Louis Hills) so I worry about the schools. Anyone know of any good pre-schools? Any thoughts on the best private elementary schools? I would like to send him to public school, but from the research I've done the schools are so, so poor that I can't do it and feel good about myself. We are not Catholic, so I am not interested in Catholic schools.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

What is your budget? Are you willing to consider Lutheran or Baptist schools?

My son goes to Hope Lutheran School (Eichelberger @ Brannon), and we've been really happy with the school. We're not Catholic or Lutheran, but we chose his school because I thought it would be less of an issue than at a Catholic school. He also attended preschool there, and the teacher is really good with the little ones. His class was around 12, but this year there were only 3 kids in preschool, so it can be pretty small.
I've also heard good things about the preschool at Union United Methodist, which I think is on Watson.

Hope Lutheran is good. I know a lot of people who have been very happy there.

I moved my kids from St. Luke's Lutheran to Paideia Academy in Carondalet, which is a charter school (free and public, but not subject to the same craziness that's going on in the St Louis public schools ). We have been very happy there. They are a fairly new school, with some great teachers, and the principal is very hands-on and involved. We are seeing great things happening there.

I would stay far far away from St. Luke's, though....unless you like to wonder whether the school will be open from day to day, because they can't seem to pay bills, teacher salaries, building insurance, etc etc etc., and the long-time families have zero interest in new ideas or new ways of doing things.
