I'm an older guy from NYC, semi-retired looking to relo. I'm a musician, I write classical stuff, I'd love a loft for my gear and cats but not into the luxury lifestyle thing offered by places like Lucas Lofts. Wondering if there are less pretentious but roomy spaces to buy or rent in STL area.

Do you want a loft type space? there are some less expensive ones tucked into smaller buildings in Soulard, Downtown West and the Near South Side - For Cheaper traditional apartments you can find some nice ones off of Grand in Tower Grove (East and West) Fox Park and Shaw

Alton certainly has potential, there are lofts downtown and you can rent downtown there for pretty inexpensive compared with similar spaces in St. Louis

Alton has been working on reviving downtown, which has one of the nicer views of the Mississippi you will find

Here is the organization working on it -
