I was in St. Louis this past year for about a week and looked for bookstores to spend time in. I visited Left Bank Books (N. Euclid), discovered Spine Indie Bookstore and Cafe (Arsenal St. by Benton Park) and stopped at Subterranean Books (Delmar Loop). That might be the way I would rank the three I visited. Left Bank is an honored institution in the CWE. Spine is a gem dealing only in independent authors and publishers and good coffee and good vibes. Subterranean is a fixture on the Loop. That is what I had time for, but I know there are many others. I was born and raised in St. Louis and used to roam through Amitin's on Washington Ave. but I left town long before its eventual demise. It was an amazing, almost indescribable place and a tremendous loss to the city in my opinion. But that was then...
