I called AT&T and was on hold long enough to read a short novel. I hung up and sent a letter to the home office. After a month of nothing, I sent another letter. Still no reply. So, perhaps I'll learn more here. My area code is 314. Generally, we in 314 area can call into the 636 area code toll free. However, I recently found that a call to Chesterfield was not toll free. My question is how do I know when I dial a telephone number with 636 area code, whether it is toll free or not?

Thank you.

I honestly have no idea, but this is a big part of the reason why so many people I know in St. Charles county have long since dumped their land lines -- we used to have to pay extra for what they called "metro calling" otherwise calling someone in St. Louis county would be long distance. It was that way even before the 636 area code was created. Nonsense.

^ This. Furthermore, we dumped our land line because the tax on the line was fully 50% of the cost.

Thank you. Believe it or not, within half an hour after I posted here, AT&T telephoned to reply. It seems they cannot give a definite answer since it depends on distance between the two. Dial the number and if it asks for the "1", you know it is a "local toll call". So, I just dial and listen. Might get them, might not.

Unless I am remembering wrongly, it is done differently on the Kansas City side. Johnson County, KS, is area 913 and all toll free to 816 (Jackson County MO). Maybe Johnson County (a very business-heavy county) had some influence there. Seems to me that St Charles would be entitled to the same.

That said, I wasn't even calling out of the county. I was calling Chesterfield which is, I think, in St Louis County as I am. In Jackson County (and over the line a short distance to the east) it was still toll free.

Ah well, we "little people" have no influence. At least Mother Nature is being nicer. Happy Day. Hazel
