I don't live there-- never have-- but here's some info to chew on:

Population: 16,061 (5,164 per sq mi)
Median household income: $73,193
Racial mix: 84.9% white, 7.8% black
Median home value: $635,325
Percent of college-degreed adults age 25+: 67.9%

My take: I'd say it requires a good income to maintain a home in Clayton. I've heard that the school district is one of the best in the St Louis area. The city's street department is notorious for keeping the roads clear in winter, so schools don't close for "snow days" very often. Oh, and the Clayton skyline is impressive, especially for a city of 16k people!

The best place IMO. It has a skyline and a downtown that look like they're from a larger city, but it also has nice suburban neighborhoods with big houses & yards. It's centrally located. It's very close to St. Louis, Forest Park, Wash U, the Loop, the Galleria, etc. It's has a metro link station so that makes it even easier to get places. Some of the best public schools in the nation, and numerous private schools close by.

That $73,193 number is actually a lot higher. They count the "1167 people in local jails and other confinement facilities" in the population so it skews the income and other demographics. The median family income is $107,346.

Also, I dunno where this 16,000 number comes from. City data has the population at 12,537 in 2007.

Best public schools in the city, that are nationally recognized and ranked. Amazing central location- can get anywhere within 15 minutes. Yummy traditional architecture that St. Louisans eat up. Great city amentities, including a fabulous pool AND outdoor ice skating rink. Epicenter of fine dining and art, boasting some of the finest St. Louis eateries and galleries. Amazing resale. Perfect blend of urban and suburban amentities. The peak of St. Louis desirability, but it comes at a cost. Don't expect to spend less than 350-450k for even the smallest fixer upper house in Clayton...

smtchll: That "median household income" data is from City-Data's Clayton section...I sure didn't know it included the city's jail population...how deceptive!
The population figure comes from Wikipedia. Granted, Wiki isn't always the best source for accurate data; but I'd like to believe that Clayton has added more residents since that 2007 figure was cited by City-Data. I guess this will all be resolved once the 2010 census figures are released.

Clayton is very nice, probably one of the nicest areas of St. Louis.
