Is it the FIFA World Cup, Olympics, or another? I'm asking because I'm doing a speech on the Olympic Games and I want to say it's the biggest but I may be wrong considering the weight of football/soccer as a sport internationally. Thanks.
Define what you mean by "biggest?" The most spectators, participants, monetary expenditures etc? If you are more specific, maybe we will do your homework for you
I would say the World Cup. I dont know that many people that have an interest in the OG's anymore. I know I used to watch it mainly for boxing years ago but the point system is so bad its a mere shadow of what actual boxing is so I dont watch it anymore.
The World Cup is the biggest, there isnt even a question and some would argue that the European Championship and annual Champions League are even bigger than the Olympics.
I think a strong argument could be made for the summer games ........ although it's really difficult to compare the two contests ...... one involves vastly more sports and more countries
It's also difficult to judge as the last summer games were in China which led to incredible TV numbers .... for example, the 700M who watched the last WC final on a global basis was roughly half of the 1.3B that were typically tuned into events during the last summer games - except that 1.3B wasn't a global number .... it was the chinese number
fun comparison and you can't go wrong either way
world cup involves a more popular sport, more popular build up, just as corrupt and contentious governing bodies and site locations
olympics are interesting as it can take something that people generally aren't passionate about and get huge numbers and popularity for a short period of time - Michael Phelps and swimming were ratings gold in the US ....... not sure if I could have stumbled across a televised swim meet since
so there are a lot of interesting angles you can take this from ........
since you are there to talk about the olympics, maybe try not to get sidetracked by something arbitrary like "what is the biggest" and avoid adding haze to the discussion by bringing up other major global events without a strong direction.
you could focus on how the games elevate the sports involved, the economic ramifications of hosting an olympic games, the political elements of hosting the games, the global appeal, the impact of the olympics for it's respective sports (for example, it's helped a sport like basketball become more global and has provided a very nice platform while another american sport like baseball has failed out of the games as it couldn't expand beyond the americas) ... i see no reason to get caught up in "the biggest"
Olympics is cool but people sort of semi get into it.
Soccer is #1
Cricket is #2
