And Walter Cronkite loses it and gets positively giddy!
Quote:
“My God, our building's shaking here,” he says with palpable delight. “Oh it's terrific, the building's shaking! This big blast window is shaking! We're holding it with our hands! Look at that rocket go into the clouds at 3,000 feet! Oh, the roar is terrific!”
I was on a tour of the space center once and the bus driver was a retired fireman from the Cape. He said when that rocket went up, Cronkite turned and saw two of the engineers standing in the door frame, like they would during an earthquake. Cronkite asked if they would be safe and the engineers replied; "Don't know, we've never launched one before!"
That's when America was great, but like Tek said, now here we sit. Worried about how much things cost and how we can't afford anything. How we are in so much danger form everything, how we are so worried about trivial things that have been magnified to keep those in power, in power. We need a leader to take us back to space and I just don't see one. We're a bunch of middle mangers.
"People who go broke in a big way never miss any meals. It is the poor jerk who is shy a half slug who must tighten his belt."
- Robert Heinlein,
