In a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal, the astronomers report the discovery of what may be the first truly habitable earth-like exoplanet orbiting the nearby red dwarf star Gliese 581.
Quote:
Discovered via the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, the researchers claim their candidate planet is about three times the mass of Earth and orbiting smack in the middle of the “habitable zone,” or at the right distance for liquid water to be present on the surface (that is, not too hot and not too cold). Its mass also suggests it is a rocky planet with a solid surface and enough gravity to maintain an atmosphere.
I read about this earlier. It's about time , but I think they may be jumping the gun regarding the atmosphere , possibility of life , et al. Without further intensive analyses of the characteristics , it may turn out to be airless , or like Venus or a large version of Mars. Still , one cannot help but to ponder the possibilities. For instance , I recall a testimony from an abductee claiming to have been taken to a desert planet with a red sun. This may or may not be the place. Only time , in concert with studies , will tell.
Because of the tidal lock I think it makes chances for evolved life lower. One side will be baked while the other in a deep freeze. Winds between the two sides would probably get to be pretty bad. I wonder if plate techtonics exist on that planet. Or any kind of geothermal activity at all. I think it would help the chances a little.
Well good news, it seems one of the scientist that discovered the planet says the chance of alien life is 100%
There might be a high chance but a scientist or good scientist can't just say there is an 100% chance without doing some research and getting data to back it up.
