Hey I am a college student at BHSU in Spearfish. I have to say I absolutely love the State! (I grew up in Alaska and lived a few years with my family in coastal North Carolina.) I plan to major in Education specifically in teaching English. When I graduate I would like to stay in state and hopefully get a high school teaching position.
I was wondering if anyone here has experience teaching in SD and what their thoughts are? I can see the pay scale is not as high as most states, but the state itself and the people is what attracts me the most. Also, any info on teaching on the Res? Pine Ridge, Dupree, etc... I am very much into the Native American culture and that would be something I would be more than willing to do.
Thanks!! My 2nd post so it's nice to meet you guys! SD rocks!!

Welcome to the forum. You have chose a very critical profession. Our kids are most impressionable during those years. I commend you.
SD is SD. It's what you make of it. Friendly, helpful folks that will bend over backwards to help a neighbor. They take care of each other, but they expect independence from all. Have you thought about small, rural schools? Very rewarding, long term.
Thanks! Yeah actually rural and small schools/small town is what I would prefer. I am a small town person and would like a nice quiet place to raise a family. South Dakota being one of the least dense populated states in the country, I imagine, has many great small communities to raise a family in.. I would like to stay West River preferably, it is more suited for me.
I've also gotten the chance to check out a few small towns here, going to my friend's home towns I've met while at school... I've been to Faith, Dupree, Buffalo, Bell Fourche..a few others I can't remember..

Ok, I'm going to do what no man before me did. I went to a one room school house. Drove a team to get there. Had to hump snow to get the shovel so I could clean off the steps.
Now, I'm being honest. It was 6 miles to school. Uphill, both ways. Hey, it was Hand County. We didn't have a hill in sight. hahaha
To teach in a small school is a life long commitment. Do it for the kids.
You are looking at an admiral profession. Small schools, out in the middle of no-where, is the best. Think about it.
