Florence City Council passed first reading of an ordinance to zone and annex property on West Palmetto St. that is rumored to be under consideration by LiDL, the German discount grocery chain. The company interested in the property had "sales of $100 billion last year and is expanding with 1,300 locations across the United States."
I love that the Euros are invading the grocery market. This will put the losers out of business, and hopefully that includes Food Lion and Bi-Lo.
It will also put pressure on Walmart to be competitive on cleanliness and service.
Bi-Lo and Food Lion have eroded through the years through their bad decisions and increased competition from participants in various grocery segments. Neither is expected to be around much longer.
I would hope the European invasion is more than limited assortment/discount grocers. I do not know if this is an opportunity Ahold Delhaize would like to undertake.
I am going to be really fascinated to see what Ahold does with the 1,100 Dirty Food Lions they're inheriting.
Food Lion has already begun yet another upgrade focusing on refreshing stores and better customer service. It will be interesting to see if Ahold continues this plan. I prefer their Giant stores over Food Lion, but they seem to be determined to maintain the Food Lion brand. To satisfy antitrust concerns with the merger, they have chosen to close Giant and Martin's stores in Virginia while keeping the Food Lion stores open. So perhaps they indeed foresee a future for Food Lion.

If Food Lion is making serious improvements to its stores such as adding pharmacies, lowering prices, improving the availability and selection of fresh foods and quality products, and improving customer service, it may be able to survive.

Food Lion is currently advertising a "new and refreshing" campaign. We shall see what this means.

I have noticed the campaign. "Easy, fresh, and affordable" must have failed quickly. It would be nice if Food Lion is serious with "new and refreshing," a concept it has been seeking to achieve for years.
