We are looking at relocating from PA to SC, we are thinking Greenville area. we are paying crazy taxes here to the tune of 8 grand a year and shows no signs of stopping. we have vacationed in the south numerous times and love the southern hospitality and laid back atmosphere. now the questions we have and we have tried the search button and found some answers are, the personal property tax is something we currently don't have and are a little concerned with. is there a link to get a dollar amount for our cars and such? it seems that depending on year and cost of your cars and toys it can really add up per year. thanx for any replys and have a good day!

Well no matter what, you are going to save some of that "8 grand a year" you are now giving to the government. After that savings, does it really matter? If you are accustomed to keeping new cars you will pay several hundred dollars on each car every year. If like many that live here you keep your cars until they turn to junk, you'll be paying well under $100 dollars on each car every year. I don't know of a calculator that is available online. Tax rates vary by county and by city.

You need to post your specific questions in the Greenville-Spartanburg sub-forum.

In general, SC has an "ad-valorem" tax (personal property tax) - I absolutely hate this and this is one of the worst aspects of living in SC (besides having a state income tax LOL) - if you have a new and/or expensive automobile, prepare to pay hundreds of dollars per year for the privilege of driving on our dilapidated road system (the older the car, the less tax one needs to pay per year). Additionally, there are no vehicle inspections in SC. So, with these two points noted, you will witness numerous junkers and unsafe cars in SC.

On the other hand, SC does not tax groceries - and, property taxes are generally low (unless you choose to live in the city of Greenville - higher taxes - but, with it, comes a much better quality of life). The Upstate is famous (infamous?) for having the lowest gas prices in the country - of course, one only needs to see the crumbling state of I-85 thru SC to necessitate the need to increase this tax.
