SC GOP rejected this. As I said before, one rural county of SC does not represent the entire state.
Quote:
The South Carolina Republican Party is rejecting a proposal by the Laurens County GOP to require candidates to sign a pledge on conservative values.
The pledge would require candidates to promise they have not had premarital sex, will be faithful to their spouses and will not watch pornography.
The pledge endorsed by Laurens County Republicans last month also requires candidates to protect gun rights, oppose abortion under any circumstances, endorse balanced budgets and oppose same-sex marriage.
State Republican Party executive director Matt Moore says it would be illegal for the Laurens County party to deny ballot access to candidates who refuse to sign the pledge.
Laurens GOP Chairman Bobby Smith says the party will not do that, but hopes the pledge will encourage good values by Republican candidates.
Just to clear up any confusion (since some people love to make news like this seem larger than it really is), this proposal was NOT supported/endorsed by Republican representatives from Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, or any other county in South Carolina EXCEPT Laurens...
Yeah, but is it really such a big leap from the completely useless state constitutional amendment prohibiting same sex marriage that the state repubs were all hot and bothered to get passed? The big difference is that the one that passed was messing in the lives of private citizens, while the one the state party is freaked out over is related to how politicians live their own lives.
The primary reason this scares the GOP party so badly is that they're afraid they would have to sign it, knowing they're lying, and knowing they'd get caught in their lies. One of them there politico-moral quandries, you might say...
Yeah, well they're everywhere. We have an infestation in Iowa that no one seems to be able to eradicate.
Our bunch got judges removed for allowing gay marriage.
"A rose to three former Iowa Supreme Court justices who received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. (And a rose to the award committee that recognized them). Justices Marsha Ternus, Michael Streit and David Baker sat on the court when it found unconstitutional a state law prohibiting same-sex marriage. The unanimous ruling reinforced the idea that the Iowa Constitution granted equal rights to everyone. It’s doubtful the judges saw the unanimous decision as “courageous” at the time. They were simply doing their jobs. But the justices were victims of a relentless campaign against gay marriage that was a national embarrassment. The award, created in 1989 by the Kennedy family, seeks to “encourage elected officials to choose principles over partisanship.”"
BTW The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award is the country's highest award for non-military personnel.
What is it about Laurens? Isn't that where the KKK store is/was located?
Yes, it is.
Edit: I just want to add that I've never been to Laurens. I only knew the answer, because I posted about the shop back in 2008. Earlier this year, a judge ruled that a Black church owns the property on which the store is located. Ah, the sweet smell of irony!

I hope you folks won’t mind my participation on this thread as an outsider but this issue is tearing me apart. I’m in the process of actively planning my relocation. At least two towns in South Carolina are at the top of my list. It probably makes me a shallow person but I’m in love with South Carolina’s physical appearance, (just going by pictures I’ve seen here, on other sites and in magazines cause I’ve never actually been there), perhaps to the point of obsession. I likely would have been there by now were it not for a strong list of other finalists for my next home and the apparent compulsion by South Carolina conservatives to do and say the most outrageously repulsive and asinine things on an increasingly regular basis.
If it were just this one instance, discussed in this particular thread, one would perhaps, just scratch his and her head at the lack of maturity and integrity among public officials but this has been a consistent pattern over the last two or three years, at least. I’m not going to enumerate those incidents here because I’m sure that most of you don’t want to rehash them anymore than I want to even think about them. My point is that there are lots of other people who are otherwise impressed with South Carolina but won’t move there because of the excessively ugly face presented by conservatives. Deep down, we all know that, no matter how strong and independent an individual may be, there will come a day that he or she is dependent in some way on the innate fairness, justice, kindness, and reason of their neighbors and community. In the past, this was a subject of pride for the Deep South, which was truly unique in all the world for its level of grace, charm and civility.
I have been reading through the threads on the South Carolina boards for a few days and am encouraged by the intelligence and civility displayed here. I am also pleasantly surprised at the open, positive and enlightened discussion of this issue on this thread. My ancestors settled in South Carolina and I believe it to be a more civilized place than the coarse tone of conservatives would imply. In their heart-of-hearts, most people know, whether it is expedient for them to admit it or not, that conservatives really don’t believe the poisonous garbage that they spew. They’re merely trying to appeal to the lowest denominator of humanity, in order to keep the masses divided and distracted from the real and profound harm done by the corporate special interests they truly represent. They are the ultimate carpetbaggers! What is particularly troubling is that their demonstrated belief in hate and ignorance comes across as deeply-ingrained and passionately held by the general population.
I respectfully urge South Carolinians to become more involved in your communities and government. Please educate yourselves on the issues and be aware of the caliber of people you elect to public office because, when they speak for you, they really do speak for you, as far as anyone knows!
As a transplant, I don't mind your participation one bit but all I have to say really is you said it well.
While they're worried about the subject of this thread...criminals have been selling cars they've stolen and selling them to junk yards. In SC you don't need a title to sell a car to a junk yard if it is over 8 years old. Lots of cars on the road today are more than 8 years old. As you said, we have way more important things in this state for our legislators to worry about.
Make sure you continue your research before making your decision.
