Well they actually said they did not put a lot of importance on this championship. That happens every time an European club looses the competition.
I think I see a pattern here... European club wins, they say "we're the best in the world", European club loses, they say "we didn't play it seriously, it has no importance"...
It's the confrontation between the top clubs of each continent, and it's not always won by the European club. In fact, MANY TIMES it's not won by the European club.
So, how can it have no real importance?
Just because Europeans refuse to watch it on TV, doesn't mean it has no real importance. It has.
If the Clubs World Cup has "no real importance", then the national teams World Cup has no importance too. You should only watch the Euro Cup, and ignore the World Cup.
Its of no real importance because all it does is add to congestion of the domestic league for the European team and it ads the worry of having players injured and affecting their domestic league. Fans just dont care about it, I have never met a fan that has said they hope they win the world club cup. Its just not a big deal.
Just because people from South America watch it on TV does not mean it has any real importance, it doesnt.
If you cant figure out the difference between the World Club Cup not being important and how the World Cup being important there is something wrong.
I can see why European clubs don't give much importance to the cup. It is a big deal in South America because it's a way for them to show their traditional rivals that they beat a top European club and therefore are "best in the world".
That said, it is still a shame for any champion's league champion to loose this tournament all the same, no matter what they think of it. The top European teams are nearly or as strong as any National Team in Europe, let's face it. It's not a joke when people make the analogy that Spain National team is a Barcelona without Messi.

And who said that only people in South America watch it on TV?
People in Mexico, Central America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia watch it too.
Saying that it's not important is just an excuse that the European clubs uses to justify when they lose it!
The sooner they put an end to this ridiculous so called 'competition' the better, and while they are at it they can 'scrap' the European super cup thingy bollox! :-)
