My fiance has been applying for jobs in Sioux Falls as most of you know - since I have been working here since October.
Well she's interviewing with the screener at Wells Fargo corporate who says to her "I see you have applied for a number of jobs in . . . in . . . PSY-oaks falls."
My fiancee who has only been here twice in her life had to correct her. She just told me this story tonight and I was laughing 'til it hurt!
It reminded me when I was on a family vacation between first and second grade. Dad would let me navigate with the map. I was an avid map freak even then and my, mom, well, she had us drive the wrong way up a one way loading dock in Cheyenne, Wyoming. So dad let me tell him where to go, probably the only time I ever was able to do that.
Anyway, I remember asking him, "dad, you want to go through dez moan-es (Ia) or around it?
There is a subtle difference in how Aberdeen is said between those from the northeastern part of the state and rest of the state. To me it seems that the NE SD people say Aberdeen a little faster.
I have a high-school/college friend who says Ar-Kansas City instead of the regular Arkansas that is said by most people. He would say Ar-Kansas River also. When I tagged along to Kansas with him, the Kansans say Arkansas as Ar-Kansas, emphasizing the Kansas part. Kinda odd.

You guys got nothin' on Hawaii... you should try some of the names there -- and listen to the newbies try and figure out Kalaniana'ole Highway, Kamehameha Highway, Kealakekua, and my favorite singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. It's musical - Lualualei is my favorite place. The biggest problem in Hawaii is that the tourists love the names of the streets so much that they rip off the signs. Then you can't figure out where you are -- the signs are gone!
The funniest ones about Sioux Falls i've heard are:
SUEK Falls and the funniest one:
SUCK Falls
