Taking our 26 year old son and girlfriend, and our 24 year old daughter to these two cities over the course of a week. Husband and I belong to the Holiday Inn Club, so we will be staying in Holiday Inn's - probably Express - for the duration. Since the son will be able to drive the rental car, I'm thinking the kids will head out in the evening after we old folks hit the rack. Should we plan our hotel around downtown? Is that the area they most likely would enjoy? They live in Austin, TX and are used to a busy night life. Is downtown a safe place at night?

Probably spend 3 days in Portland before we drive on to Seattle. We are renting a car to go between the two cities. So, 3 days - Any ideas on what we should do and see would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There is a HI Express location on Aurora Avenue, kinda close to the Space Needle, that can be a very good value/location compromise, especially in comparison to the downtown places. Parking is a relatively reasonable $10 a day, for example (or at least it was when friends of ours stayed there once). Not as walkable or exciting as downtown, though.

Given that you don't have much time, consider taking a tour like this one:

Scenic Seattle Tours, Boeing Tours, Falls & Winery Tour

Go on the tour (they will pick you up), and it will give you some ideas on what to explore on your own. Be sure to look on the tripadvisor.com forums for other ideas on lodging, etc.
