Drive up I-90 to Snoqualmie Pass. It's about an hour to skiing from Seattle. Longer, if weather conditions aren't ideal. You have to check the road and pass conditions before you go, because sometimes they have to close.

You can also go up US-2 to Stevens Pass, or to other areas north like Baker, or to Rainier. Lots of choices for snow... we went sliding on some of Rainier's snow into June and I think July. The skiing in 2008 extended into June but I'm told that's unusual, it's usually done by May.

If you want to go snowmobiling or do other winter sports, they are all around, but not as well marked as the ski areas. :-) But basically, find some mountains, and you're in good shape!!

Western Washington is extremely variable when it comes to snow. Some years, there will be tons of snow at Snoqualmie Pass by early December. Other years, none.

Some years Seattle will get that freak snowstorm with 6-10 inches that usually will melt within a day or two.

The point is you can't predict it. However, this year we are coming off an el nino year, which, in general is dry, warmer weather for western Washington. But even that is unpredictable!

You know, it's funny. There was a KING5 special on tonight about the weather for this coming winter, and they interviewed this one UW professor, who said it would probably take longer than usual for the passes to open up.

Crystal Mountain OPENED yesterday. One of their earliest openings ever!
