Any thoughts on how the streets are named in Seattle area? I did find some details on wikipedia, but I still wonder why house numbers are in five digits, almost all streets are named after numbers, why there would be different streets in a area with the same name except for directional change, etc. Thoughts?

The wikipedia article pretty well covers it. This is a pretty easy city to get around in once you get a general idea.

There's a good map of what the directional designations mean at http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~publi...st1962_100.jpg

Read Sons of Profits by William Speidel who researched a lot of early Seattle History and created the Underground Tour. There is a chapter talking about the numbering of the streets. Essentially Denny and Yesler (two of Seattle's founders) could not agree on how to plat streets out which ended causing that confusion down town. Doc Maynard attempted to mediate between them but was never really very successful.

I highly recommend his books, but go on the Underground Tour if you've never been first.
