I replaced my three year old's car seat this weekend. Upgraded her to a combo toddler-booster seat so she can keep this one until she no longer needs a car seat.

Her old car seat went into my car, and the one in my car now gets retired. The seat has never been in an accident; however, I looked at the back and it should have gone outta service in September 2008.

I had planned to give it away on freecycle, but now I'd really rather recycle it. Anyone know of anywhere around the Puget Sound where I can take a car seat to be recycled and not get tossed into a landfill?

Did some googling on car seat recycling, but Portland, Oregon was the closest I could find.

Expiration dates on car seats, give me a break! First it was 1-year expiration dates on canned goods. Someday it'll be expiration dates on lamps. Goodwill wouldn't take much of my child's baby stuff (too many lawyers), so I put it all in the van and waited outside Ikea for a pregnant woman to walk by. The first one I found was thrilled to take everything.

As I understand it, the plastic in the car seat breaks down. Just like plastic parts of your car console that bake and eventually crack in the sun (or cold), the car seat will too. If they made car seats more out of metal, it probably wouldn't be an issue - or a nice place to sit.

My sister-in-law gave us her old Britax car seat. I was happy I didn't have to buy one till I downloaded the manual (for installation instructions) and read the bit about expiration. Checked the seat and it was passed (her oldest kid was about 7 at the time).

Hopefully the manufacturers aren't simply full of sh*t saying it'll break down. I'm betting there's SOME BS to it, but they're counting on us not being willing to call them on it. I've seen enough plastic break down that I wasn't, and bought a new seat. However, I have a bit of a problem just destroying it. I mean, surely it's better than nothing, and SOMEBODY could use it, right? Who otherwise wouldn't have a decent carseat at all? But then if it's somebody that has a kid that needs a carseat, don't they deserve a good reliable carseat, not a questionable one? Grr. Liberal ethics issues, go away. That's why the S-I-L's Britax is in the rafters in the garage. If there's a good place to recycle it, then that's what we'll do with it.

I think that's precisely the case. Parents can't take any chance at all with their Precious Cargo, right? It also gives the manufacturer a legal out if there's any malfunction after the expiration date.

Metal corrodes, as do other materials. Seen plenty of kids toys break in very short order.

If you want it to be re-used, just put it up on craigslist/freecycle. Otherwise, toss it out to the dump.

Quite honestly, if you don't think it's safe for another kid, toss it. If you think somebody could use it, give it away. But in the grand scheme of things: IT DOESN'T MATTER!

Hmmm... methinks I won't be taking advice on car seats from a sixteen year old.

I would suspect plastic to fail much sooner, particularly any sort of metal to plastic connection.

As it turns out, South King County SafeKids will be having another car seat recycling event the end of April at IKEA in Renton. Anyone interested, check out the website when they update it. Anyone not interested, for goodness sake DON'T CLICK THE LINK!!!
