Do you mean 3.85? If not, where are you purchasing your gas? I am sure we all want to know!

Marylee,

We did just that move last summer from Austin to Seattle for a job at Amazon.com. The increase in salary covered our increase in housing cost. We have a slightly bigger/nicer house here but were living in Circle C in a nice starter home prior. We never moved up all the time we were there because we loved our neighbors so much. We live on the Eastside in Sammamish. Our grade school is on par with our Austin school but our middle and high schools are better in Seattle than Austin. More on par with Westlake than Bowie where my kids would have gone. The two things that I notice are more expensive here are eating out and gas. We just don't eat our as much and my hsuband takes the bus to work so we actually spend less on gas overall here. Groceries can be more but I shopped at CM before and Trader Joe's now so I spend about the same on groceries. Other than that, some things are less expensive (insurance, water, energy bills) so in our books, housing is the main cost. I am a CPA and keep everything in Quicken so I can give you a true comparison if you need it. Just DM me. One of the reasons we left Austin was for career reasons. My husband felt there were very few big names in Austin and after being in tech start ups for 8 years, he was ready for a larger job market. MS is not the only company here BTW. Lots of big names call Seattle home and it is a diverse economy - more so than Austin. Don't get me wrong...I love Austin but Seattle is also a great place to live even considering the weather and cost of living. We have not regretted our decision.

No, I haven't heard anything about pending layoffs at MS, quite the opposite, my husband has an offer with them! Thing is, he has a good job right here in Austin. The MS job would pay more, but we wonder--we uproot ourselves to move up there, then, get laid off?

Ok, the pros are--MS pays more, plus great benefits, plus I think relocation is part of the package. Also, great retirement package.

Cons--We move, if we can sell our house, the real estate market in Austin is somewhat flat right now. So, we manage to sell, don't have much equity, move up there, take on a much bigger mortgage, then, layoffs hit. Layoffs are common here in Austin, we've both been hit by the pink slip in the last few years.

So, it boils down to--where will we have the most long-term security, here in Austin or with MS? I realize that job security is an oxymoron, just doesn't exist except in relative terms. But its a great offer from MS!

So, for those of you with your fingers more on the pulse of MS, how does it feel for long-term security?

I'll be damned if I help those who manipulate people's emotions for their own benefit.

Just thought I'd say that.

Sure MS is a good place but the culture has certainly changed! Moving here is another story, be prepared: high cost of living, weather, most people are RUDE and unfriendly on the Eastside!

Months later, rumors of MSFT layoffs are actually starting to emerge. Hopefully they're not accurate.
