Are there GPS satellite type gizmo's for serious hikers that work all-the-time (provided satellite is functioning in earth orbit)? Weblink?

StealthRabbit, apparently isn't "home" since "home" is in a national scenic area where development is restricted.
So "Where in the World is StealthRabbit?" sorry Carmen.

In the old days, We only had $40 landlines. Today I got ~$60 data-Cellular + $96 DSL+landline + Smartphone amortization costs of ~$50 x 2 phones.

Guess what. It's not back in the day anymore. Times change.

This is a joke post, right? People go to these places to get away from that carp. For emergency help get a radio to communicate with the forest service.

I have Verizon, their reception is undeniably the best in this region. My signal around Mt Rainier, especially when I'm skiing at Crystal Mtn or hiking out of Paradise, is pretty good. I do pretty well in Greenwater and in the Sunrise area too.

Crash, that's a little harsh. I have days that I need to check in with my work, having the phone around allows me to be on the mountain even though I have clients to check in with. Not a bad trade, don't you think?

The mountains need to add those beautiful cell phone towers every 5 miles so you can feel at home.

People can do whatever they want there. You don't have to use your phone if you don't want to. Nobody is forcing you. But people who need their phones should also have that option.

Those satellites for GPS are one way downlinks. For uplink you need a satellite phone.
Satellite Phone

I'd be glad to have no cell coverage in the mountains.

The part people haven't mentioned is that there is no cell signal inside the national park because no company can put up a tower within the national park. That is by design as well as protecting the views within the park, keeping the area looking pristine.

That being said, there is talk of Verizon putting a small tower on the roof, I believe, of the visitor's center at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park. Since this is the most heavily visited part of the park, the people there and nearby will be able to finally have coverage.
