I will be visiting Kirkland soon and I would like to try to avoid rush hour times for highway 405 to Everett. What are bad hours in the morning and afternoon?

God, I LOVE hyperbole! Or maybe I just haven't been there recently enough. If so, I definitely won't set up things so I have to travel 405 in daylight.

Ivastoya, if you head north from Kirkland toward Everett about 9am, you should be okay. Try to be back in Kirkland by 3pm.

Just earlier this week I went from Sammamish to Everett several times, via 520/405/5. I found that after 9am, and until about 2pm it was heavy but at or close to the speed limit.

This sounds less hyperbolic. More useful. Maybe a LITTLE less fun.

It's not total hyperbole - since they added the tolling lanes - regular folk sit and sit and sit...

Report says I-405 tolls made traffic worse, WSDOT, other group disagree - seattlepi.com

I used to drive that daily. I'd say between 9 and 2 to be on the safe side, after 2:30 is risky. Sometimes things can clear by 7, other times traffic is still nose-to-butt at 8 pm..

Isn't that kinda the PURPOSE? Odd that they can do that politically, but they'd prefer everyone were on transit or at minimum van pooling or something. Thing is that geography in King County just doesn't allow expansion of roads. I don't think money is the real limiting factor. I think great minds, you know like Zuckerberg or Jobs, need to be let loose on the problems that FORCE people back into their cars! I can't believe "I love my car" is the entire reason people are willing to sit in gridlock. As I've watched traffic develop all over America for decades, the easy answer was "the American love affair with the automobile" and "it is Detroit's fault". But that is wearing out. There just isn't any credibility to the traditional explanations. Our ways of working and shopping are involved. And flexibility needs to expand to the entire lifestyle to get people riding instead of driving. Of course, the profitability of car manufacture is a speed bump. Too bad if that makes people prisoners in their polluting cars.

Or people vote to cut taxes, but complain when they get hit with user-fees and tolls to pay for essential services, like highways.

People complain becuase they're getting hit with tolls and fees, ON TOP of taxes that are already among the highest in the country.

Get ready to pay for ST3 in car tabs, but don't worry, it'll be done on time and under budget like all ST projects.
