One can see that even fun traditions like this one can have modern origins. Note that most of the cities where this takes place it has only been practiced since the 2000s.
Speaking of quaint village customs, does Ballard still have a May 17th parade every year, for Norwegian Independence Day? That was always kind of fun.

You piqued my curiosity, thought I caught some pictures of that a few years ago. Sure enough, here is one of the parade participants, May 17, 2014.

I met my husband 16 years ago in Seattle, have been married 14 1/2 years and we have a wonderful daughter. Ironically, I was on my way out of Seattle to Asheville NC for grad school when we met. Up until I met him I had been underwhelmed by the dating prospects, perhaps because where I grew up was so culturally different (mid atlantic/southern) then the PNW but he was from the South so I felt at home with him! This city has changed so much since I arrived 17 years ago that honestly what I found to be the sometimes, suffocating homogenous nature, has dissipated to a huge degree! Many of my friends have since met their life partners here and they are all not natives to the area...Seattle in 2017 is definitely not Seattle in 2001!

I hope you find someone special too!!!

My husband and I met at work. In those days a guy could (respectfully) hit on a girl without fear of being slapped with a sexual harassment suit. He kinda stalked me and I liked it - we had a big mutual crush on one another. That was 38 years ago and still going strong. Seattle was a very cool, quirky, fun town back then

I'd say that if you're a white person, in general, that you're chances of finding your significant other is very very good here....or maybe if you're a black/african person.

Another factor is the location a person lives in. I don't deem puyallup and this portion of pierce county to be great dating area for me.

Try getting involved in the Balkan folkdance scene in Seattle; your look could go over well. It's very social. Just try it a few times to see what happens, even if you don't like dancing.
