Hello, we are settling in beautifully after relocating to Ballard in August and we are itching to get outside and hike around the area. We are a family of four with two boys ages 9 and 7-so beginning/easy hikes would be a great start. Thanks for any recommendations!

The best hiking areas are fairly close on the eastside. Our Favorites are:

Redmond Watershed preserve, off of Novelty Hill Road, near Redmond Ridge

The trails in Soaring Eagle Park in Sammamish

The Beaver Lake Preserve trails off of West Beaver Lake Drive in Sammamish

The Tiger Mountain trails from Highpoint Way exit (Exit 20) of I-90, just east of Issaquah

If you are in the area of Port Angeles, be sure to do the Marymere Falls trail at Lake Crescent

on on the website of the Washington Trails Association Washington Trails Association you'll find more hikes than you'll ever be able to hike :-) I also recommend the hiking books that are published by the Mountaineers. All the hikes in the books are also on the wta site but there's a little more detail in the books.

There's also Discovery Park in Magnolia. The 3 mile loop is fairly easy, and there are also some other trails within the park.

Carkeek and Golden Gardens have some decent trails as well, but not quite as cool as Discovery.

We've done Franklin Falls twice. My boys were 5 and 8 the first time and did fine. We did Swamp Monster trail on Tradition Plateau (Tiger Mnt???) last week and they hated it. Even I thought it was boring. Both areas have parking outside the main area, but if you already have a Discover Pass, use it.

Also check out the arboretum too! We did that on Thanksgiving a couple years ago. Nice urban walk and then we went for dinner in Madison Park area.

That's Seward Park, and it's well worth a visit. There's a loop around the peninsula there, along the lake, and then trails in the woods, with huge trees.
Cougar Mountain is pretty easy for kids. You don't have to climb to the top, and if you do, the round trip is about two hours.
The UW Arboretum is lovely, and flat. Just be aware of rush hour when you make the trek from Ballard. It's not far, but at the wrong time of day it could take a while.
Carkeek and Golden Gardens are practically in your neighborhood.
And I think you'll love Discovery Park.

Thanks so much everyone! And flyingsaucermom, that about sums up how I feel as well, nature and food are tops on my list Yes, we frequent Golden Gardens quite a bit but have yet to visit Carkeek park or Discovery or the Arboretum, so maybe we'll trek out there first! We are really excited to hike any trails that lead to waterfalls Thank you for the link to the Trails website!
