Hi, my son (6) and I have a couple days left at the end of our trip before heading home. We were originally going to spend them in Seattle, but we did that on the way in and I'm not very interested in going back into the city (I'm not a big-city person!!). I am told there are lots of lovely, relaxed towns just outside of Seattle. Could anyone suggest a place that is just nice to hang out in, and child friendly (good playgrounds, possible beach etc). We will be flying out of Seattle International airport, so access to the airport must be fairly easy (we have a car).

thank you,

Do you have a passport? if you do I highly recommend visiting Victoria BC! Also in the north cascades, Diablo Lake is Breathtaking! Visit the Gondola Crystal Mountain to see amazing views of Mt. Rainier, and See the Waving Bear at the Olympic game farm across the sound.

Diablo Lake and yes the Water really is that color!

There's a lot more to Seattle than downtown. You can hang out in West Seattle and Alki Beach and visit Lincoln Park with its tidepools and trails and playground, the light house. If you didn't get a ferry trip in, you can hop the Fauntleroy ferry as a walk-on, or drive on and explore Vashon Island.

You could also spend a few days exploring Tacoma. There is a really good history museum there and across a skybridge there is a glass museum where your kids can see them actually blowing glass. Point Defiance is one of the great urban parks, with a zoo and aquarium, a beach, wooded trails, spectacular views of the Tacoma Narrows and Puget Sound. My favorite thing there is Fort Nisqually, a re-creation of the first Hudson's Bay Company trading fort on Puget Sound complete with re-enactors. And you could make a day trip to Northwest Trek near Eatonville.
