Hi all!

Thought I'd "pick your brains" (YUK - what a visual!) about any insights you can offer about life in Enumclaw. I grew up in a really small town (Boulder City, NV). Arriving there at the tender age of 3 in '61, it was all I ever knew until moving from there in '97. At the time we moved there, BC had approximately 3,000 residents. By the time we moved, it had grown to 15,000, but that was over 30+ years and I was there for all the growth. People found our town charming, but the criticism, sometimes, was that it was "clique-ish". I knew people who could overcome this by (theoretically) "reaching their hand out (for a handshake)" and saying, "Hi there! I'm (so in so); I'm new in town. What can I do to get involved?" and their story turned out well. I don't mind being "the new gal". But I've also lived in areas where - no matter how long you had lived there, you were never going to be "from there".

So those of you, "in the know", let me know what you think of life in Enumclaw. I've been away from my little hometown for a long time now. I've really missed that sort of "small town community life". Let me know if you think there's room in Enumclaw for a few more "good men (and women!)"

Thanks - Lori

At this point Enumclaw is only well known for one thing.

And unfortunately it's not pleasant, in fact not something mentioned in a family forum.

Despite that, it's a small rural town with farms, a quaint old downtown and amazing views of Mt. Rainier. Also a short hop to skiing at Crystal Mountain. Probably a good place to retire, with very few jobs in the area. I would suggest that you also consider Black Diamond.

Not something mentioned in a family forum? That's never stopped me before

Enumclaw is pleasant enough. And what it's famous for actually happened outside the city limits. And I'll second Hemlock's mention of Black Diamond. Black Diamond has the oldest bakery in the state, a real good one.

I don't know how you missed that story, but I'm a little surprised that it's on Wikipedia.

Yeah, I was in Boston that year. The Wikipedia entry sure describes something different than I would have guessed from the headline. I've been to Enumclaw once or twice and it has some companies like Mutual of Enumclaw but overall has a semi-rural feel and is pretty in the typical W. WA way. While that story is mind-numbing, I can't help but think Enumclaw wishes it would go away.

Yeah, unfortunately for them it has the same notoriety as places like Hayden Lake. "Oh, you're from Hayden Lake? Not fond of those dark skinned people I bet."
