I was looking at a property in the Union Hill-Novelty Hill area and noticed something odd. The listed (elementary, middle, high) schools were all over 6 miles away, although there were schools that were closer. This was because it was in the Snoqualmie Valley School District. The closer schools were in the Lake Washington School District, about a mile away.

Does this happen often? Does that mean, if you live in this house you HAVE to go 6 miles to your closest zoned school? Is it possible to go to a closer school even if you are zoned for a different school district?

School districts cover certain geographical regions, and the places you're looking at just happen to be on the outer edge of one of the regions. You go to the school district that you're paying taxes for.

Sean#s is correct; its all about the tax-paying district basically.

You do have the legal option of going to the next door school district as long as they have the space for your child and that you provide/are responsible for transportation.

We have that here in Sammamish where high school kids have to go right by Skyline in the Issaquah District to get to Eastlake in the Lake Washington District.
You will find that in that are and other border streets the realtors will advertise when they are in the Lake WA District, and keep quiet when in the Snoqualmie Valley School District because it makes a big difference to buyers.

Also keep in mind that if you're getting the school district info from a real estate website, it might not be accurate. That info is inputted by real estate agents, who sometimes just guess rather than look it up on the school district websites themselves. I find school and school district information wrong pretty regularly. It's a good idea to double check via the LWSD or Snoqualmie Valley SD websites.
