Hi, I just got a full time job in Kent and will reluctantly have to move from Olympia unless I want an hour's commute to and from work. I'll most likely find a room for rent on Craigslist to start with, I'm thinking 400 or under a month.
I'm a 28 year old single guy with a car and really my main concern is crime and not having a hostile and horrible place to live within driving distance of Kent. I thought of settling for Tacoma but don't hear very good things about it unless maybe ya'll could pinpoint the nicer parts? I'm open to anywhere in the general area though.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks

Tacoma gets a lot of undeserved flack IMHO. Yes, there are still some pretty sucky parts, such as the Eastside neighborhood, or the areas closer to towns like Spanaway, Parkland, and Lakewood, but the northern parts of Tacoma are getting pretty nice these days. Neighborhoods near the 6th ave strip, Proctor District, the North End/Stadium District, and Ruston are all good areas.

If you want to live closer to Kent, my votes go to either Des Moines, or Burien. Both make for pretty short commutes to Kent, and are better areas than Kent, but are still relatively affordable. Tacoma would give you more options for things to go do while you're home, while Des Moines and Burien have their own small town charm going for them in their respective downtown areas. They're also pretty close to Seattle if you want to go up there at all. Tacoma will probably be a bit cheaper to live in than the other two, due to their proximity to Seattle

Just my $0.02.

One tip- those areas have been hit really hard in the housing bust so make sure the person you sublet from is paying their mortgage. Everyone I know that lives down there has either been foreclosed, is attempting a short sale or is debating walking away.

I would consider most of Kent to be safer than much of Tacoma, but also there is Maple Valley, Covington, and Renton.
