It's not much time and Seattle will be chilly, likely damp to wet and overcast. It will be getting dark by about 5:30 or so. I would suggest going to Pioneer Square, lots of pubs and restaurants around there. If you like Pike Place Market it's close by and if you want to do something silly and fun, you could take the Underground Tour which is down by Pioneer Square.http://www.undergroundtour.com/about/index.html

Also, you could take a ferry ride across to Bainbridge Island.

You can also do the tourist thing and have dinner at the Space Needle which has a revolving restaurant at the top.

I would second the suggestion of Pioneer Sq. You don't have much time in one day and you'll probably want to stay close to downtown. I would also suggest the Farmer's Market, which is right downtown west of First and Pike. Actually, it will be easy for you to vist both places as they are easy walking distance and both are on First Ave. There will be a 99.9999 % chance it will be cloudy, cold, foggy with rain or snow. You won't see any scenery, it will be completely obscured and dark. So, you'll want to booze it up inside. Vancouver BC will be the same way, maybe colder, but there is always more going on in Vancouver. You'll have to pass through Vancouver on your way to Whistler. Whistler/Blackcomb will be a great destination if you are a skier. You'll feel left out if your not.

This place has only 70 varieties of scotch to choose from:
Bookstore Bar :: Downtown Seattle American Café and Bookstore Bar | Library Bistro
Not far from the ferry dock, the Pike Place market, and Pioneer Square.

'Bremerton / old mothballed friend':
OK, I've got the perfect itenurary worked for you.
Remember, downtown Seattle is not very large. You can walk from the Northend to the Southend in less then 15 minutes, providing you don't window shop. Find a centrally located downtown hotel. In the morning visit and have breakfast in The Farmer's Market. At around noonish, walk South to the foot of Madison where the ferry terminal is located. Catch the ferry by foot traffic to Bremerton. Walk to the mothballed battleship which is near the Bremerton ferry terminal. It will take you about one hour each way on the ferry. Allow one hour at the Battleship. You will have to allow an extra two hours at most for walking and waiting and eating lunch in Bremerton so this will take up five hours of your day. This means you'll get back in Seattle at about 5:00 PM. This will give you time to clean-up and rest. Then walk down to Pioneer Sq. at around 6:00-7:00PM for dinner and all that jazz.
A perfect one day vacation in Seattle! Unfortunately you most likely will see no more then a thousand feet in front of you anywhere as it gets pretty dark and groomy in Febuary.

Thanks Vinylly - My old friend is actually the USS Ranger - CV-61.... I served on her from 84-88..

She has been there for a while and I would like to say hello... Would I need a car or is it walking distance from the ferry?

Thanks

Breakfast at the Edgwater Hotel, then take a walk though Pike Place Market, then take a ferry ride to Bainbridge Island, then come back to Seattle and head over to Alki Beach for some fish and chips at Sunfish, then head back to Downtown and do some shopping at the flagship Nordstrom, then head up to Capitol Hill and have some coffee at Vivace, then head back to your hotel and take a nap, then take a nice hot shower and throw on a fresh change of clothes and go have dinner at Palisade, then go up to Keary Park up on top of Queen Anne Hill and enjoy the view of the Space Needle and the city, then go to Barolo or the bar at your hotel and have a night cap before heading back to your room to call it a night.

Thanks FFG.....

Would it make sense to take ferry over to Bremerton then drive around to Bainbridge for lunch - then ferry back to seattle before heading north to Vancouver on day 2 ?
