My fiance and I are relocating to Seattle from Columbus, Ohio next month for his job. He'll be working in Auburn and I'll be working from home. We are in our younger 30's with no kids (but do have a golden retriever) and looking to live in an area with some sort of community, where we can walk to the local coffee shop, bars, restaurants, etc. and also remain close to downtown as we'll likely head there a lot on weekends (and with lots of visitors from Ohio). We really prefer the city life to the suburbs at this point as we do not have kids yet. He is open to the idea of a 30-40 minute commute, especially given he will probably work an earlier schedule most days (maybe 6-3 or 4ish) and may be able to avoid some traffic that way.

Any suggestions of where we should look to live? We will rent at first and are looking to get a 2-3 bedroom place for around 1500-2000/month. It's also important to me that we are in an area that is safe and I am comfortable walking by myself as I'll be home by myself a lot.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

I'd suggest Columbia City ... 20 minute bus ride downtown, lots of shops, restaurants. Your fiance could just head south on Rainier which becomes 167 to Auburn ... a reverse commute so I'm thinking 30-40 minutes is possible.

You could also look into the trendy areas of Tacoma (the Northend, Proctor District, Stadium, et. c.).

Thanks...I think we prefer to stay closer to Seattle vs. Tacoma, and Columbia City is actually the main area we've looked so far. Any other suggestions? Anywhere in West Seattle?

Most of west Seattle is nice, and it's close to that price, but with all the construction getting out is going to make a long, nasty commute to Auburn.
Try Burien.

I think Capitol Hill may be what you're looking for. It's the neighborhood you're describing in terms of amenities, is close to I-5, and (depending on when you drive) could be done in 35-40 minutes.

Look into the area by 15th or, for more lively sections of the neighborhoods, check out Pike and 10th/12th area or Pike/Pine west of Broadway
