Our family will be relocating to the Seattle are next summer and I was looking for some suggestions on commuting and what would be the best place to start our home search.

My husband will be working in Redmond and I will be doing a grad program at the U of W. My program will have me on campus 7 days a week during most of the first year so the commute has to be reasonable.

Also, we have 2 children a 3yo and an 11yo. The 11yo has tested into the gifted range and we would like to keep her in a gifted program.

We would like to live in a liberal area and spend about 400,000 on a home. I think that might get us a shanty in Redmond so we are really looking for something outside that area.

So to sum up...
-commute to Redmond for DH and to U of W for me
-Gifted school for child
-at least halfway reasonable home prices
-blue area
Any recommendations on areas to look for a home or should we rent for the two years of my program and if so in what area?

Wow, thanks for even reading my jumbled mess. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Christina

p.s. how long is the commute from Redmond to U of W on average?

The commute from Redmond to UW on bus isn't bad, but by car about an hour. I'm sorry to say that 400k will not put you in area with the best schools. You may want to rent. Bellevue has great schools. Sammamish and Issaquah do as well. Look on the Redmond side of the Plateau(commuting reasons) zip code 98074. This is the Lk. Wash School Dist. Very good programs. If you want to buy it will be on average 550k+ to where the best schools are. Those areas mentioned are not real "blue". There are liberal people who live in these area but not like the city.

I commute from Redmond to the financial district, my bus picks me up at 7:12 and I typically get off at my stop around 7:55, so approx. 45 minutes. It would probably be at least 10 minutes shorter to get to UW. By car, you would need to give yourself more time because you wouldn't be able to take express lanes.

They are right, traffic is pretty bad in those areas. You might want to move to Issaquah just because it seems easier to go on the I-90 then the I-5 rather than going on the 520/405. Issaquah is a good area, I think. If you go by bus it won't be sooo bad. I know someone who lives there and the commute ranges from 45-60 mins each way (depending on traffic of course).

If you commute during non-rush hour times you will be ok. I commute from central Seattle to dt Bellevue arcross the 520 at about 10:40am and it usually takes me about 15-20 minutes. During rush hour though it will be totally, and I do mean totally different story.
