am starting to get really worried. while i was searching i found a few ok apartments.so i need help and information about these neighborhoods, ballard, northgate and Greenwood.depending on what am looking for what would be the best neighborhood.

my top priorities :

not far from UW and downtoun
close to restaurants ,markets(no car )

I'd be happy to consider any other suggestion or any thing that will help...

Those are all OK neighborhoods.
Ballard is pretty big, so it varies from one part to another, but most of it's just fine, and an area with a lot to do.
Northgate has a big mall and good bus transit to downtown.
Greenwood is fine. it's a little less nice as you go west of Greenwood Ave, and 85th is a busy street. I'd say Greenwood might be the safest of the three, Ballard would be the most fun.

Greenwood safer than Ballard? Wow, I'd have to see stats on that.

Ballard, as Ira pointed out is a varied place. West near Shilshole is very nice and north (North Beach) is also very nice.

But then Greenwood also is connected to Carkeek and the Highlands, both very nice. And a few parts of Phinney Ridge are also very nice too.

Northgate is not really on my list of places I'd live.

Hey I'm wrong! At least according to this Seattle crime map, Greenwood is less safe than most of Ballard. The darker blue is the safest, the lightest color the least safe:
