Have your say on the Bobby Jones nature park

City of Sarasota residents can share their thoughts Nov. 15 about amenities to include in the newly created wetlands and nature park next to Bobby Jones Golf Club.

With the grand reopening of Bobby Jones Golf Club set for Friday, Dec. 15, the city has begun public outreach efforts to share preliminary concepts for park amenities at the Nature Park at Bobby Jones.

Built in conjunction with the restoration of the Donald Ross golf course layout, the nature park will be a rustic area with newly created wetlands, crushed shell trails and cart paths repurposed into walking and biking trails. The City of Sarasota is seeking input regarding additional park amenities to complement the natural surroundings.

The city’s Parks and Recreation staff will present initial conceptual options during a community meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 John Rivers Street. The presentation can be previewed at LetsPlaySarasota.com.

For those who cannot attend the community meeting, comments may be emailed to ParksandRec@SarasotaFL.gov by Nov. 30.

The Nature Park comprises 90 acres of urban green space.

Venice Elections: Farrell and Smith earn seats on the Venice City Council

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/polit...il/ar-AA1jyPmp

Joan Farrell and Ron Smith both claimed seats on the Venice City Council Tuesday, with Farrell ousting incumbent Mitzie Fielder and Smith besting newcomer Dusty Feller, as both winners contended the outcome was a verdict on development decisions.

Throughout her campaign Farrell said the election outcome would determine whether “the voters have a seat at the table or the developers continue to control.”

“I think what’s happened is there’s been a sea change and I think the voters have woken up to the realization that development has proceeded too quickly,” she added. “I think they’re not against development but I think they’re alarmed at the speed and intensity of it and I think the vote reflected that.”

Smith agreed that the intensity of growth influenced voters.

“It’s no doubt unbridled growth was a key issue in the whole campaign,” Smith said. “They hate to see clear-cutting, it enrages people when they see that.”

Voters in Venice hopeful after election results

For full article:

https://www.mysuncoast.com/2023/11/0...outputType=amp

Voters in Venice are hoping yesterday’s election results lead to change they have been calling for for years.

“For the past two years, these communities in North Venice have worked so diligently and hard to present our voice in front of City Council, but they haven’t listened,” said Venice resident Debbie Garicke.

Voters got the chance this week to use their vote instead of their voice and elected two new faces to the City Council: Ron Smith and Joan Farrell.

In this election, there was a major push to elect representatives that will fight for the desires of citizens and not outside interests, many saying they’re confident Smith and Farrell will do just that.

Residents seeking to separate from the city of North Port have appealed a circuit court decision concluding the City Commission correctly interpreted state law in denying their petition for de-annexation on Oct. 22, 2022.

The appeal, filed Wednesday evening by West Villagers for Responsible Government attorney Luke Lirot, contends that 12th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Danielle Brewer incorrectly applied case law when she determined the City Commission afforded the residents' group due process, followed the the law and based its decision on competent substantial evidence, as required under state law.

FPL customers to see lower storm costs

For full article:

https://www.newsbreak.com/news/32252...er-storm-costs

State regulators Thursday approved a proposal that will reduce the amount of storm costs passed along to customers by Florida Power & Light.

The utility, which serves customers in many parts of Florida, including Charlotte, Sarasota and DeSoto counties, has said the tab for restoring electricity after Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole was lower than expected, and in September proposed lowering the rate.

The savings could amount to $8.65 a month.

The Public Service Commission unanimously approved the proposal. It will mean that from January through March, FPL customers will see a decrease in the part of their bills that goes for storm-related costs.
