Another pedestrian bites the dust. Hopefully the recent rash of local pedestrian fatalities will stop once snow bird season ends.

Pedestrian struck, killed by SUV in Bradenton: Police

https://news.google.com/articles/CBM...S&ceid=US%3Aen

A pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV Monday morning near the intersection of 8th Avenue West and 13th Street West in Bradenton, officers said.

According to the Bradenton Police Department, the crash was reported at about 7:30 a.m.

The pedestrian, an 81-year-old man, was walking south on 13th Street West when he was struck by the SUV east on 8th Avenue West, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to Blake Hospital for treatment, which is where he died from his injuries, according to authorities.

The man was not using the crosswalk when the crash happened, and investigators said the SUV driver did stay at the scene.

Eastbound 8th Avenue West was closed off for about two hours while police investigated the crash. Officers have not identified the pedestrian, but said they are now working to identify his next of kin.

Two East County residents join Manatee Planning Commission

For full article:

https://www.yourobserver.com/news/20...ng-commission/

The Manatee County Planning Commission doesn’t make decisions, but it's the first board to review land use proposals, many of which are located in East County.

As of Feb. 8, two new East County residents — Monaca Onstad and Jeffrey Eslinger — are making recommendations to commissioners on which projects to approve or deny.

Onstad was the community relations director for Schroeder-Manatee Ranch. Residents can credit her for coming up with developing ideas such as the Lakewood Ranch Farmer’s Market and Ranch Nite Wednesdays at Waterside Place.

After six years of creating lifestyle programs for Lakewood Ranch, in 2022 Onstad launched her own lifestyle and amenity consulting firm, OnPlace.

Up until January, Onstad was traveling all over the country consulting with developers. She’s since hired someone to take on much of the national travel for her.

A planning commission position requires the member to review material and attend monthly meetings, one more responsibility for Onstad.

All aboard to Bradenton Beach!

Manatee County’s Gulf Islands Ferry made waves of the historical variety, landing Feb. 9 for the first time in Bradenton Beach.

The ferry made its inaugural landing at the Historic Bridge Street Pier at 11:30 a.m. and was welcomed by a crowd of onlookers and a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce.

The ferry program, coordinated and marketed by the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and operated by Gulf Coast Water Taxi of Clearwater, represents another step toward enhancing coastal connectivity between the mainland of Manatee County and Anna Maria Island.

The first passenger service between the Bradenton riverfront and the Anna Maria City Pier began last month, followed by expansion Feb. 9 to Bradenton Beach.

After cutting the ceremonial ribbon, Bradenton Beach Mayor John Chappie expressed his excitement.

“This is a momentous day,” he said. “We’re really excited about this. It’s another amenity to what is great about Bradenton Beach and our Bridge Street area. To bring people out here so they can enjoy what we get to enjoy every day.”

Demolition set to begin at Sarasota Kennel Club

After 95 years, the 26-acre site on University Parkway will be cleared for unspecified future development.

For full article:

https://www.yourobserver.com/news/20...a-kennel-club/

Jack Collins Jr. sat in the cab of an excavator, invited by the new owner of the Sarasota Kennel Club to take the first whack at demolishing the iconic structure at the edge of the Sarasota city limits on University Parkway,

He couldn’t do it.

The legacy of three generations of building up and operating the Collins family business was too much for him to tear down — albeit only a symbolic piece. So he sat next to new owner Baird Inc. President and CEO Eric Baird and watched as the mechanical arm and bucket knocked down a corner of an auxiliary building adjacent to the grandstand.

That is all that has been taken down for now, but within weeks demolition contractor Forristall will move more equipment to the site that will be used to make way for redevelopment, which has yet to be planned.

New owner Baird Inc. of Sarasota, a family office that as part of its portfolio invests in under-utilized residential and commercial properties, is working with engineering and land use professionals to assess the site's potential. In May 2023, Baird acquired the 26-acre property from the Collins family for $9.5 million.

The sale occurred after the family, led by Jack Collins Jr., canceled a contract early last year to sell the site to North Carolina-based Aventon Holdings, whose plan to build an multi-family community there was mired in a protracted lawsuit against the city brought by the Sarasota-Manatee Airport Authority.

At issue was an interlocal agreement between the city and the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport that prohibits new residential development beneath the 65-decibel noise contour of the runway.

“There was an agreement between the airport and the city and we didn't even know about it,” Collins said. “They wanted to keep stretching the case out and we decided we didn’t want to be in the lawsuit even if they could prevail.”

Shortly afterward, the property was acquired by Baird.

‘I could use whatever help. I am broke’: Raging Sarasota County house fire leaves homeowner devastated (Video)

For full article & video:

https://www.newsbreak.com/news/33317...ner-devastated

A Sarasota County homeowner is devastated after he said he lost all of his belongings in a raging fire.

“I could use whatever help. I am broke. I mean I am broke, I don’t have any money in a bank or nothing,” said the homeowner, James Ward, who describes himself as a collector. “I lost my coin collection, my stamp collection, I lost my sword collection, antique guns.”

The fire broke out just before noon at Ward’s home home on Ponder Avenue in the Fruitville area.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the home engulfed in flames.

A neighbor said the fire was intense, and they believed all the items around the house provided extra fuel for the flames. There were explosions, and it all happened very quickly, the neighbor said.

Firefighters said the flames did not spread to neighboring homes. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
