After members of public protest potential for damage to Myakka River shoreline, County Commission agrees to continue hearing on Diocese of Venice petition for two retaining walls

Project team members stress necessity of variance to protect Diocese’s prayer retreat property

For full article:

https://sarasotanewsleader.com/after...taining-walls/

Speaker after speaker during a Feb. 21 Sarasota County Commission public hearing stressed that the project was not needed and that it could damage one of the state’s highly popular waterways.

The applicant’s representatives countered them, providing details to make clear why they believe the initiative is needed.

Nonetheless, with two county commissioners clearly opposed to the initiative, the applicant ended up seeking a continuance of the hearing — at the recommendation of two other commissioners.

On Feb. 21, the Diocese of Venice formally was requesting a variance to install two retaining walls and realign a driveway within the 50-foot River Area Buffer of the Myakka River Protection Zone (MRPZ), as the county staff report explained it. The affected property, comprising 24.9 acres, has a shoreline approximately 2,350 feet in length on the Myakka, which is a state-designated Wild and Scenic River, as the staff report further noted.

The address of the property is 3989 S. Moon Drive in Venice.

Proposed sale of Florida House to nonprofit associated with building industry organization to be on March 5 County Commission agenda

Commissioner Moran had won his colleagues’ approval in September 2023 to launch the transfer of ownership

For full article:

https://sarasotanewsleader.com/propo...ission-agenda/

As one of the Consent Agenda items for their March 5 regular meeting, the Sarasota County commissioners will be asked to declare the former Florida House structure in Sarasota surplus property and sell it for $10 to the Business Industry Institute, a nonprofit established by the Manatee-Sarasota Building Industry Association.

The Consent Agenda generally includes business matters considered to be routine. Although any commissioner can pull an item from that agenda for discussion, the board members typically approve the Consent Agenda without any comments.

Anyone wishing to provide remarks about a Consent Agenda item has to do so during the Open to the Public comment period at the beginning of a meeting.

The March 5 session will begin at 9 a.m. at the R.L Anderson Administration Center, which is located at 4000 S. Tamiami Trail in Venice.

A county staff memo in the March 5 agenda packet reminds the commissioners that, on Sept. 12, 2023, they voted unanimously to direct County Administrator Jonathan Lewis to work with the Sarasota County School Board and what was then the Manatee-Sarasota Business Industry Association (MSBIA) “to transfer ownership interest of the Florida House to the MSBIA or any other non-profit entity of their choosing.”

The MSBIA has changed its name to the Suncoast Builders Association, its website notes. Jon Mast of Sarasota remains its CEO, the website shows. His wife, Teresa, a Republican candidate for the District 1 County Commission seat that commission Chair Michael Moran will give up in November, because of term limits, serves on the Suncoast Builders Association Board. She is the owner of a general contracting company called the Davin Group.

About 80,000 gallons of partially treated sewage overflows onto grounds of Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility after mechanical problem

For full article:

https://sarasotanewsleader.com/about...nical-problem/

On the morning of Feb. 27, approximately 80,000 gallons of partially treated sewage overflowed onto the grounds of Sarasota County’s Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), county staff has reported to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).

All of the effluent that overflowed filters in the plant was contained on-site, the report noted. About 20,000 gallons was recovered by vacuum trucks, while the remainder was contained in the stormwater pond on the ground, the report said.

“Approximately 435,000 gallons of combined stormwater and partially treated wastewater [were] being pumped back through the facility for retreatment,” the report pointed out.

The incident began after staff made a switch in the flow of wastewater so a piece of equipment that had failed could be taken offline for repair, the report explained.

The Bee Ridge WRF is located at 5550 Lorraine Road in Sarasota, near the county’s Rothenbach Park.

It is being converted to Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) status, which will enable the facility to remove far more nutrients, such as nitrogen, from the reclaimed water. Nitrogen has been identified as the primary food for the algae that causes red tide, Karenia brevis.

Is a 'suspicious situation' report acutally considered a crime? Seems kind of iffy to me. IMO it could be a good thing meaning residents are being more vigilant resulting in lower serious crimes. Or are there a lot of suspicious characters lurking about but they don't end up committing serious crimes?

Sarasota County Feb 29 Weekly Crime Report: 707 Incidents and 17 Crime Stories

For full article & crime map:

https://www.newsbreak.com/news/33510...-crime-stories

During the last week, Sarasota County reported a total of 707 crime cases. The most frequently reported crime was 'Suspicious Situation', accounting for almost half of the total with 351 cases.

This was followed by 'Other' and 'Disturbance' crimes with 68 and 66 cases respectively. 'Domestic Related' incidents were also significant, with 53 cases reported.

Other types of crimes such as 'Theft', 'Assault', 'Arrest', 'Trespass', 'Vandalism', and 'Burglary' ranged between 17 to 45 cases.

It's noteworthy that severe crimes like 'Robbery', 'Shooting', and 'Hit & Run' were relatively rare, with 'Hit & Run' and 'Robbery' each reported 3 and 2 times respectively, and only a single 'Shooting' case was reported.

This data provides a clear picture of the crime situation in the place, highlighting a high prevalence of 'Suspicious Situation' incidents and a comparatively low occurrence of more severe crimes.

A taste of snook

For full article:

https://www.newsbreak.com/sarasota-f...taste-of-snook

Unless the FWC issues a last-minute executive order to the contrary (which has been known to happen), snook season opens March 1 here in the Charlotte Harbor and Sarasota Bay snook management regions.

Some of you are excited. You’ll be able to put a snook on the table legally for the next two months. They’re a favorite (frequently “the” favorite) eating fish of many Florida anglers.

Some of you are shaking your heads. There’s a reasonably large contingent of fisherfolk who believe the snook population is not healthy enough to support harvest at any level, or that these fish are too valuable to kill and fillet.

My friend Robert Lugiewicz often compares snook with largemouth bass. He’s right in many ways. Both are ambush predators. Both bite better in low light conditions. Both are available to just about any angler who wants to catch one from shore or from a boat. Both are high-profile target that people spend a lot of money to catch. Both come in the easy-to-catch smaller size and the much more prestigious trophy range.

And both are argued over by the people who are most fanatical about them: Are they a gamefish that should be caught and released, or are they meant for the fryer and the fun of catching them is just a bonus?

I am certainly not foolish enough to think I’m going to change anyone’s mind once they’ve backed up into either of those corners. Instead, I thought it would be useful to look at some snook data from the 2023 annual review of snook management metrics for the Charlotte Harbor region, which is a report produced by the FWC.

Our Sarasota County Fire Department Earns Prestigious International Accreditation

https://www.newsbreak.com/news/33513...-accreditation

The Sarasota County Fire Department (SCFD) has received Accredited Agency Status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). The decision was made unanimously in Orlando on February 27, 2024, after SCFD fulfilled the CFAI’s criteria. This accreditation places SCFD among 35 similar agencies in the state.

County Administrator Jonathan Lewis commended the accreditation, stating it showcases the department's dedication to improvement and community service. He added that the team will strive to provide top-notch service while ensuring their safety.

Emergency Services Director Rich Collins also praised the SCFD, noting the department's commitment to high standards. The CFAI accreditation is a global benchmark of excellence in fire service, reflecting SCFD’s dedication to Sarasota County.

The accreditation process involved third-party verification by a peer team to assess the department’s self-evaluation and compliance with 250 performance indicators. Fire Chief David Rathbun called the achievement a significant accomplishment, showing the department's dedication to public safety.

The accreditation is valid for five years and is voluntary. To keep its status, SCFD will submit yearly reports to the CFAI and undergo a full reaccreditation process in 2029. The SCFD is an all-hazards response department serving unincorporated Sarasota County and the City of Sarasota.
