Scientist who helped develop Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine agrees third shot is needed as immunity wanes

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

- The chief medical officer of BioNTech told CNBC that people will likely need a third shot of its two-dose Covid-19 vaccine as immunity against the virus wanes.

- Dr. Ozlem Tureci, co-founder and CMO of BioNTech, which developed a Covid vaccine with Pfizer, said she also expects people will need to get vaccinated against the coronavirus annually, like for the seasonal flu.

An unvaccinated worker set off an outbreak at a U.S. nursing home where most residents were immunized.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/21/h...nfections.html

An unvaccinated health care worker set off a Covid-19 outbreak at a nursing home in Kentucky where the vast majority of residents had been vaccinated, leading to dozens of infections, including 22 cases among residents and employees who were already fully vaccinated, a new study reported Wednesday.

Most of those who were infected with the coronavirus despite being vaccinated did not develop symptoms or require hospitalization, but one vaccinated individual, who was a resident of the nursing home, died, according to the study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Resistance to vaccines has been steep among nursing home staffs nationwide, and the low acceptance rates of vaccination increase the likelihood of outbreaks in facilities, according to the authors, a team of investigators from the C.D.C. and Kentucky’s public health department.

The outbreak involved a variant of the virus that has multiple mutations in the spike protein, of the kind that make the vaccines less effective. The study estimated that the vaccine, identified as Pfizer-BioNTech, showed effectiveness of 66 percent for residents and 75.9 percent for employees, and were 86 percent to 87 percent effective at protecting against symptomatic disease.

MIT researchers say you're no safer from Covid indoors at 6 feet or 60 feet in new study challenging social distancing policies

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/cor...es/ar-BB1fYKCM

- An MIT study showed that people who maintain six feet of distance from others indoors are no more protected than if they socially distanced by 60 feet.

- According to the researchers, other calculations of the risk of indoor transmission have omitted too many factors to accurately quantify that risk.

- "We need scientific information conveyed to the public in a way that is not just fear mongering but is actually based in analysis," the author of the study said.

Hillsborough County outpacing the state with rise in COVID-19 infections

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/hi...ns/ar-BB1fXcy5

COVID-19 is back in the spotlight in Hillsborough County as the number of new infections continues to rise.

"The county has seen a 60 percent jump in COVID cases in the past month," Dr. Jason Salemi with USF Public Health said.

The epidemiologist continues monitoring the forecasts for COVID-19 in Florida. He says Hillsborough County has outpaced the state because of its high transmission rate.

"The most recent weekly report, the state was at 8 percent test positivity. Hillsborough was at 10.7 percent," Salemi said.

Hey all good news! It looks like the short term uptrend we've had for the past few weeks is topping out. Also - along with the local Covid-19 numbers the numbers for the state of Florida suggest we've reached a peak. I'll have more information when I do my weekly report on Sunday.

Manatee County COVID update: 47 new local cases reported, the fewest in nearly 2 weeks

https://www.bradenton.com/news/coron...250894064.html

Manatee County reported just 47 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, the lowest number of new cases in the past 10 days, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Manatee County’s daily rate of new positive cases decreased from 5 percent to 4.3 percent.

More than 163,000 Manatee residents — about 40 percent of the population — have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Statewide, about 8.4 million people have received at least one dose of a vaccine, public health officials said.

'Can resume immediately': CDC, FDA lift pause on Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine

https://www.wcvb.com/article/advisor...ults/36213530#

Health officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration have announced an end to the pause on the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

The government announced Friday evening that the CDC and FDA are lifting the 11-day pause after reviewing the data, saying the one-and-done vaccine is safe and effective.

The CDC and FDA decided that J&J's vaccine is critical to fight the pandemic — and that the small clot risk could be handled with warnings to help younger women decide if they should use that shot or an alternative.

Not that surprising after watching the post-Superbowl crowds jammed together in downtown Tampa.

Week over week new Covid-19 cases declined by 16.58% in Sarasota County - and in Manatee County new cases declined by 13.67%. We also saw good sized declines in the test positivity ratios for both counties - although it should be noted that in absolute terms both counties still have a test positivity ratio well above 5% - which many epidemiologists consider to be a crucial level.

Hospitalizations rose by 6.59% in Sarasota County - and declined by 12.98% in Manatee County.

The stats for the past two weeks are currently indicating that the short term wave up is topping out.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hospitalizations
As per the state data-base that lists hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of Covid-19:

Sarasota County:

*March 14th = 54.43 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*March 21st = 41.28 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*March 28th = 38.57 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*April 4th = 41.86 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*April 11th = 42.14 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*April 18th = 54.28 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*April 25th = 57.86 Covid-19 patients hospitalized

Manatee County:

*March 14th = 49.57 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*March 21st = 35.43 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*March 28th = 29.43 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*April 4th = 25.43 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*April 11th = 27.85 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*April 18th = 38.43 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*April 25th = 33.44 Covid-19 patients hospitalized

*I report hospitalizations as the seven day average.

Biden administration to restrict travel from India starting Tuesday

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

The Biden administration has confirmed that the US will restrict travel from India starting on Tuesday in response to the surge of coronavirus cases and variants being observed in the country.

"On the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Administration will restrict travel from India starting immediately," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement on Friday. "The policy will be implemented in light of extraordinarily high COVID-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in the India. The policy will take effect on Tuesday, May 4."

The administration will issue a 212(f) order restricting entry into the US for foreign nationals who have been in India within the previous 14 days, a source familiar with the move said. Airlines have been told of the decision, a source said.

The new policy will take effect on Tuesday at 12:01 am ET.

The policy will not apply to American citizens, lawful permanent residents or other people with exemptions. As with all international travelers, individuals who fit that criteria traveling from India must still test negative prior to leaving the country, quarantine if they have not been vaccinated and test negative again upon reentering the US from India. The restrictions also do not apply to humanitarian workers.
