Manatee County Commission Chair Vanessa Baugh was criticized by fellow commissioners Thursday for creating a priority list of people to get the COVID-19 vaccine at a clinic in Lakewood Ranch, a list that included Baugh and prominent developer Rex Jensen, inviting more concerns of favoritism in vaccine distribution.

Baugh sent an email to Manatee County’s Public Safety Director Jake Saur with the names of those she wanted to get the vaccine at the pop-up clinic, which has been drawing criticism for restricting vaccinations to two wealthy ZIP codes in a community developed by a donor to Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Baugh also complained that information in the email was released to the media. The Bradenton Herald first obtained a copy of the email, which was later obtained by the Herald-Tribune.

The email was sent with the subject line “Names for the list.” It includes the names Rex Jensen, Lawrence Jensen, Robert Keehn, Marie Keehn and Baugh. It also included their addresses, birth dates and phone numbers. Lawrence Jensen is Rex Jensen’s father while the Keehns are Baugh’s former neighbors.

North Port will get a state-sponsored COVID-19 vaccine pop-up this weekend

https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...nd/4508793001/

Despite severe weather causing vaccine shortages in Florida and the rest of the country, a state-run COVID-19 pop-up vaccine clinic will be held in North Port this weekend.

The two-day event will happen at the Suncoast Technical Institute on Career Lane.

The Florida Department of Health Sarasota County and Sarasota County said Friday that they were notified earlier in the day that 3,000 appointments would be sent out in the afternoon for the weekend clinic.

“Notices sent through the county’s vaccine registration system are scheduled by order of ‘next in line’ of registration account number, not by ZIP code or location,” the county said in a statement.

The North Port clinic comes as Manatee rescheduled vaccination clinics Thursday and Friday and Sarasota offered no vaccinations Friday because of delays getting vaccine.

The delays are the result of massive winter storms that ravaged large swaths of the country this week, disrupting the vaccine supply chain.

Herd immunity by April?

Amid the dire Covid warnings, one crucial fact has been largely ignored: Cases are down 77% over the past six weeks.

In large part because natural immunity from prior infection is far more common than can be measured by testing. Testing has been capturing only from 10% to 25% of infections, depending on when during the pandemic someone got the virus.

Applying a time-weighted case capture average of 1 in 6.5 to the cumulative 28 million confirmed cases would mean about 55% of Americans have natural immunity.
Now add people getting vaccinated. As of this week, 15% of Americans have received the vaccine, and the figure is rising fast.

CDC says these are the most common side effects people report after getting Covid vaccine

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday published new data listing the most common side effects Americans reported after receiving shots of Pfizer's or Moderna's Covid-19 vaccines.

The analysis used data from the first month of vaccinations, between Dec. 14 and Jan. 13., when there were more than 13.7 million doses administered.

The CDC said there were 6,994 reports of so-called adverse events after vaccination, including 6,354 that were classified as "non-serious" and 640 as "serious," which included 113 deaths (78 from long-term care facilities and 35 outside of facilities – and so far, none of those deaths have been directly linked to the vaccine.) The median age of vaccine recipients was 42, according to the VAERS data, and the majority of adverse events occurred in women.

The most common side effects after getting the vaccines were headache, fatigue and dizziness, followed by chills and nausea. The CDC said people also reported muscle aches, fever, joint pain and pain at the injection site.

For the Pfizer vaccine, reactions were more frequent after the second dose than the first, according to the v-safe data. The CDC said the reported rate of fever and chills was more than four times higher after the second dose than after the first.

There were 46 reports of anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, from those who received Pfizer's vaccine and 16 cases for those who received Moderna's, according to the CDC. The agency said the occurrence of the reaction is in the range of those reported for the influenza vaccine.

Medical experts say side effects for vaccines are common and are actually an indication the shots are working as intended. Many physicians are advising the public to brace for some stronger-than-usual side effects from the Covid-19 shots, especially after the second dose.

While the side effects may be unpleasant, physicians say the vaccines are safe.

The CDC recommends talking to a doctor about taking over-the-counter medicine if one experiences pain or discomfort after getting the shots.

New study shows people Who had COVID-19 may only need one vaccine dose

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

A small study from the University of Maryland School of Medicine found that healthcare workers who had recovered from the virus generated dramatically higher antibody levels after a single dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines.

Two weeks after their first shot, their neutralizing antibody levels were about 500 times higher than people who had not been sick before, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“They had a faster response and a higher response than those that had seen the virus the first time,” the study co-author Mohammad Sajadi told the paper. “If I had COVID myself, I’d be OK with the single shot.”

Pfizer-BioNTech Shot Stops Covid’s Spread, Israeli Study Shows

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...li-study-shows

The Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE Covid-19 vaccine appeared to stop the vast majority of recipients in Israel becoming infected, providing the first real-world indication that the immunization will curb transmission of the coronavirus.

The vaccine, which was rolled out in a national immunization program that began Dec. 20, was 89.4% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed infections, according to a copy of a draft publication that was posted on Twitter and confirmed by a person familiar with the work. The companies and Israel’s Health Ministry worked together on the preliminary observational analysis, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.

The early results on lab-confirmed infections are important because they show the vaccine may also prevent asymptomatic carriers from spreading the virus that causes Covid-19, something that hadn’t been clear so far. Stopping transmission in this way is a key factor as countries seek to lift contact restrictions and re-open economies.

Week over week new cases decreased by about 10% in Sarasota County and Manatee County while the test positivity rates stayed about the same for both counties. Hospitalizations rose slighty in Sarasota County while declining in Manatee County. Overall the downward momentum seems to be losing a bit of steam - however the downtrend still remains intact.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hospitalizations
As per the state data-base that lists hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of Covid-19:

Sarasota County:

*January 10th = 135.57 Covid-19 patients hospitalized

*January 10th = 82.71 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*January 17th = 81.57 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*January 24th = 87.7 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*January 31st = 79.14 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*February 7th = 70.43 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
*February 14th = 58.28 Covid-19 patients hospitalized

Sarasota County health department hosts first pop-up vaccine event in Newtown

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.her...amp/4507935001

The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County hosted its first pop-up vaccine clinic in north Sarasota Sunday geared toward vaccinating communities of color.

Roughly 400 Black and Hispanic people were vaccinated Sunday at Light of the World International Church near Myrtle Street and U.S. 41. The event was spurred in part by community activists who called for better vaccine access for some of the most vulnerable members of the community. Rather than going through the county’s Everbridge registration system, a group of community leaders compiled a list of local people of color who were over 65 or frontline health care providers who had not been vaccinated. Those people were called and given appointments for Sunday.

This was the first pop-up that the Sarasota health department has hosted and facilitated on its own, rather than working alongside the state. A previous vaccine clinic in Newtown utilized vaccines from Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

As of Sunday morning, more than 71,000 people in Sarasota County had received at least one dose of vaccine; 670 of those were Black and 974 were Hispanic, although the Hispanic numbers do not necessarily offer the full picture, because people sometimes leave their ethnicity blank. Almost 32,000 were listed as unknown ethnicity.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Percentage of population with completed vaccination:
Sarasota County: 7.5%

Manatee County: 5.2%

As of Sunday, Feb. 21:

Florida: About 2.67 million had been vaccinated. Of those, about 1.35 million had received the second dose.

Sarasota County: 71,395 people had been vaccinated. Of those, 32,597 had received the second dose.

Manatee County: 44,940 had been vaccinated. Of those, 21,152 had received the second dose.

Waiting in line in Sarasota County: Vaccinations have been scheduled up to number 27,215.

US study suggests efficacy of 1st Pfizer, Moderna shot increases with time

https://www.timesofisrael.com/us-stu...ses-with-time/

Vaccinated people are at far less risk of COVID-19 infection even before receiving their second dose, a new US study has found, backing up Israeli research on one of the most burning international vaccine questions.

The Mayo Clinic figures showed the same efficacy rate as those released by Tel Aviv’s Sheba Medical center, and further show that the ability of the vaccine to protect against infection increases with time, even after just the first dose.

The Minnesota-based clinic, in a study of 31,000 people in four US states who received at least one vaccine shot, found the inoculations were 75 percent effective 15 days after the first shot, and around 83% effective 36 days after the first shot.

The figure, reflecting both symptomatic and asymptomatic illness, climbed to 89% (36 days after the first dose) for people who received both doses.

In some countries racing to vaccinate large populations, doctors are arguing over whether they should delay second shots so they can give more people partial protection with one shot. The UK has controversially adopted this approach, despite some concern in the medical profession.

COVID vaccines coming to CVS pharmacies in Florida. One location is in Manatee

https://www.bradenton.com/news/coron...249454790.html

A CVS location in Manatee County is among 81 stores that will begin offering COVID-19 vaccinations statewide, according to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office.

The new vaccine sites will bring about 62,000 additional vaccines a week to Florida through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. Publix, Walmart, Sam’s Club and Winn-Dixie’s parent company, Southeastern Groceries, are already distributing vaccines to Florida seniors through the program.

For now, Manatee is one of only three counties in the Tampa Bay area that will get CVS vaccination sites. Hillsborough County is slated for one site and Polk County is slated for two. The bulk of the planned CVS vaccination sites, 67 in total, are in Miami-Dade County.

A list of the selected CVS locations was not provided, and the governor’s office did not immediately respond to an inquiry about which CVS store in Manatee County will be participating.

A CVS Health representative said that a list of specific locations will not be released by the retailer.

“Because locations and supply are limited, we want to prevent stores from being overwhelmed by those who may seek a vaccination without making an appointment,” communications director Joe Goode said in an email. “Vaccinations will be by appointment-only and we want to encourage eligible patients to use our online scheduling tool at CVS.com to find a location that is convenient for them to access.”

Like at other retail locations offering the vaccine, immunization at CVS will be offered by appointment only and according to state guidelines. That means that seniors 65 and up, long-term care facility residents and staff and certain healthcare workers currently qualify to sign up, and proof of full or part-time Florida residency will be required.

Appointments will open later this week, according to the governor’s office. Sign-up will be available at:

https://cvs.com/immunizations/covid-19-vaccine.

Residents without internet access can dial CVS customer service at 800-746-7287 for help.
