Hi there!

I am thinking of moving to downtown Sarasota and wanted to know how safe it is? I am looking at Laurel Park, Gillespie Park or the Rosemary district because I really want to walk most places downtown. How safe is this area? Can I walk with my small child at night? Do you know any rental sites that are good for this area? Are there other families with kids? Any info about preschools would be great!

I am looking to spend no more then $1300 for a 2/2 or 3/2 with a small yard that allows dogs and am having trouble. Everything is really small or too expensive. Advice?

Thanks!

There is a homeless shelter and place that provides meals to the homeless. It is in that area...just north of the library. They kick them out early in the AM. But many hang out in groups at the area parks and all in that area, day and night. They usually leave you alone, but sometimes they will panhandle and once in awhile one is talking loud to self/cursing at others loudly(mentally unstable).

Stick to Laurel Park. Gillespie Park and Rosemary District, very iffy, not a good place to live. We did used to live in Laurel Park many years ago when it, too, was not a safe place to live, but it has changed a lot over the years. We have friends who still live there (been there for decades). It is very convenient to everything downtown and has become pretty trendy and upscale. You may have to look hard but you should be able to find something in your price range. Good luck!

My daughter lives downtown on Osprey (North of Ringling Blvd.) and she is ok there, but alot of the homes are very small since they are older and built that way. As far as saftey goes, she does walk and ride a bike around to work and places downtown and seems fine, but if you go North of Fruitville I would be leary. I wouldn't walk around there at night. There are some homeless yes, but I would be more worried about any drug activity down there North of Fruitville especially with kids. I live near downtown, but off of Tuttle and Ringling area. We can walk or ride our bikes to downtown since we are still close by. Good luck to ya!!
