I'll keep this short and simple. From everything I've read and seen in person, Santa Fe is a great town. My concern over retiring here in the fall is simple...god forbid I get major league sick, I'm screwed! Seems like the wrong town to need decent care in for a major illness. What do you locals think?
There are some terrific primary care docs here, but their Medicare practices are either closed or filling up. So, line yourself up with an M.D. or get on a waiting list if you decide you want to live here. If you have a private insurance plan for your primary coverage, then no problem.
As for specialists, again, there are some really, really good ones in a variety of fields and you shouldn't have a problem getting in to see them.
Our one hospital was taken over by the Christus chain a couple of years ago, and their ratings have climbed dramatically. For cardiac care I'd be comfortable going locally, eye care here is as good as it gets, but for cancer and other serious issues I'd consider making the hour trip down to Albuquerque - but, as I've said in other similar threads, for anything truly serious I'm going to the best, no matter where they are.
All this is from my perspective as a former hospital administrator.
Just to reiterate...I know some people have Medicare only, and that doctors want to know that they will be paid. In addition to Medicare, I have a secondary plan that pays for the 20 percent that Medicare won't pay for. Do you think that's problem?
