  1. Are you planning to move?
  2. If so, from where?
  3. What industry do you work in now?
  4. Do you plan to have a job before you move?
The job market in IT is very bad right now in SF/Silicon Valley. I moved away with my spouse to Raleigh, but the IT situation is just as bad or worse over here.

I don't have the research figures to back this up but I'm certain that these days it would average out to be the same in both. Back in the day, SV was of course the place to be, but that's just not true anymore. That said, SV still has more high profile tech companies (Google, Apple, Oracle, Adobe, HP, Sun, NetApp...etc) headquartered here than anywhere else, but that doesn't necessarily make the broader job market easier to get into or higher paying. Besides, most of the big companies have tons of satellite offices around the world anyways.

When startup money and IPO's pick up out here, then the IT jobs will as well. Or so we would like to think.

Bay area,for sure.
Although, you don't have to work for a strictly IT type company a la silicon valley.
All industries need It/engineering,including the big industries in LA-entertainment,healthcare,etc.

Bay area wages and opportunities are higher. You have SFO,east bay, peninsula and finally san jose/silicon valley...it's a far greater sized area where jobs are concentrated.

But,yea,I suppose the numbers of openings may be the same at this point.
I don't know,I would still say bay area. just me.

And I am not sure the IT industry will ever pick up again the way it was.
But CA will come up with new industry/variations on the them. Always.

Then other states will create jobs thinking this is the next 'thing'. And round and round and round we go...lol

Seriously, though,i've heard it said that CA is always the first one into the recession, and the first one out of it.
And I do believe CA will redefine itself;we need innovators and entrepreneurs, stat.
[People think that cities around the country showing signs of 'IT and software/biotech means automatically they are the 'next CA',but that is only looking at the outcome, not the source. CA's source is it's people-creativity and innovation.]
Ends rant.

Silicon Valley is recovering. Companies are starting to hire again (don't have any links, just seeing it happen firsthand).

Socal has Qualcomm, Dolby, Sony, Blizzard, definitely a second tier for IT compared to Silicon Valley. But Socal is more fun... your pick.

LA is Hollywood. There is no other place like Silicon Valley - we are the heart of tech. Other places try to imitate Silicon Valley - Boston, Colorado, Minnesota, even India - but the IPO bucks are here, the tech icons are here, the innovation and creativity is here. When Obama flies into town he has dinner at John Doer's house in Woodside. Cisco has tech divisions in our high schools. Drive down 101 right past, google, oracle, sun, net app, redhat, cisco, microsoft, apple, hp, etc.
Our GDP/person is higher than that of Manhattan. Add to that the air quality, natural beauty and focus on healthy living and it can't be beat.
The downside?? It's hard to go on vacation because it's prettier at home :-)

I agree totally, I'm actually thinking of relocating to Raleigh. California ain't that great. But if you insist in wanting to know the best place in CA, I would pick San Diego over LA or the Bay Area, it's cheaper and has better people. Pick Carlsbad, CA, it's a nice community with houses starting at $300,000. There is LegoLand if you have young children. There are some opportunities in Qualcomm and other companies in San Diego/Orange Counties.

The Bay Area has no opportunity, there are thousands of engineers battling to get a job. It might take you over a year to find a job.

Go to Raleigh, it's better.
