from: San Jose, CA to: Livermore, CA - Google Maps

On a typical weekday, a commute from San Jose to Livermore is going against the flow of traffic on 680 and 580, since most of the local job centers are lined up along the Bay or in the Santa Clara Valley. I'd wager that it would take no more than 45-1 hour, 15 minutes to get from SJ to Livermore and back.

Where exactly from SJ are you coming from? That could mean a huge difference in time. Check out Google Maps Traffic Feature on a regular workday when its not the Holidays, and you'll get an idea what you're facing.

Uggh. I know it's mostly against the flow, but even so, do you really want to do that?

Yes, it absolutely depends on what part of San Jose you're starting from. If you're coming from the North Valley, that would obviously be the shortest because it's farther up on 680. Anywhere with easy access to 280 would be OK. If you have to take 101 northbound, 17 or 880 to get onto 680, I'm sorry. If you have to take 87, I'm double sorry.

How is driving the opposite from Livermore to SJ (W Trimble Road) in the morning at around 7 am and returning to Livermore at night 5-6 pm or so? Can this be done in a reasonable time? I am coming from Boston so used to traffic.

That's consistently one of the worst commutes you can have around here, after the Bay Bridge. It can take an hour and a half. You can use Vallacitos Road (Hwy 84) to avoid the Pleasanton crush on 580, but you're still going to be walloped with the full force of the Sunol Grade, which is just a complete mess. Things might improve once they get a carpool lane in force over the hill.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if taking the train is any better or if leaving at 6-6:30 am would make a difference? Trying to keep my commute under 1 hour.
