My partner is currently negotiating a job in Mountain View. We would like to know if there is anywhere in commutable distance (max one hour) where a family of four can afford to live?! My partner will be on approx 150,000 dollars. We have two kids, 7 and 9, so schools are important. We currently live in Surrey where we have a detached house, in an ok area, 30 minute commute into London and a decent local school. We know this area is notoriously expensive so have we been priced out of a similar life over there?! Thanks!!

Yes. You are priced out from that particular lifestyle, if you choose to live in Mountain View, but still can afford good life. If it is Google, though, you can always move into cheaper place, and your partner would have to ride shuttles.

You mention salary but you say nothing about your house budget. Do you have any savings put aside for a house purchase? Are you planning to sell your current house and use what money is left to buy a California property? I can tell you that the properties you want to look at in Mountain View would be at least $1 million if you are buying, possibly more. Mountain View is a good place to live, with good schools, if you have the budget for it. You may need to look at living in the East Bay to get enough house for your family.

You could live decently on that income, but you would probably need to live out in the East Bay (far from MV) and commute into MV.

I think it would be hard to be comfortable and not have a long commute. For housing costs look on sfbay.craigslist.com (rentals) or redfin.com (sales), for schools greatschools.net can give you some idea, and crimereports.com for safety.

Maybe they can negotiate more?
