I am currently in SoCal and planning to move to the bay area and was looking at apartments on Craigslist. The rents seem ridiculous and I thought Irvine,CA was expensive!

Are there any good apartment complexes that someone can suggest for less than $1500? I prefer the large apartment complexes with pool/fitness amenities, etc. My job may be just north of the airport. My employer says there is not much difference in the cost-of-living and is not agreeing for a pay raise

Thanks in advance.

Apartment complexes with the pool/fitness amenities are more expensive. You pay extra for that stuff.

If your job is just north of the airport, you may want to include Fremont in the mix. They have a lot of large apartment complexes up there and it would be cheaper than Sunnyvale/SJ/Santa Clara

Thanks. I did look at Fremont but couldn't find any, except in Union City. Is there anything else in the South Bay?

Yes, but San Jose is the cheapest location in the South Bay, unless you want to go down all the way to Gilroy/Morgan Hill. The closer you are to the Silicon Valley job center, peninsula or SF, the more expensive.

Nope. Gilroy/Morgan Hill is too far a commute.
I will stick to SJ/SC/Sunnyvale. Most of the 1200-1300 apartments are 4-plexes or 8-plexes with worn out carpets or linoleum floors and peeling paint.

If anyone can suggest some apartment names, I would really appreciate it. It's ok even if it does not have other amenities.

Thanks again folks for your replies.

Good luck! I dont think you'll find anything better than what you described in that price range in these areas. Prices have gone way up lately.

Try the smaller cities near San Jose, like Campbell, Los Gatos, Cupertino. The best choices will be Campbell for the rent you are looking at. There's a few on Union Ave that a friend of mine used to rent...Woodleaf I think. Also try Milpitas, lower rent and JUST barely north of San Jose. I am in a similar situation – moving cross country for work and having a tough time finding a decent place. I'd really appreciate a recommendation for a clean, friendly complex in Sunnyvale, mountain view, or Santa Clara. I've looked at apartment ratings, but it's still difficult without being able to check the places out in person.

^^^This^^^^.

If you want these amenities, you're going to pay through the nose for them. And the larger complexes will jack up the rent as soon as the economy picks up even a little bit. (Actually, they've already started doing that in the last 6 months).
