Looking to visit for a few days and will probably be staying in the North Beach area. I really don't want the expense of renting a car there which is about $90 a day. Can I see most attractions by walking around and taking public transport?

There's still a lot you can see without having a car. You should be able to get over to Crissy Field/Presidio and walk to/across the Golden Gate Bridge. You could even walk/bike to Sausalito if you felt like it. Of course there are all the other attractions, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf etc which you could probably walk to, or take a quick bus ride to get to.

No, you don't need a car unless you plan to go outside the city. Here's a link to the costs of fares.

Visitor Passports

Don't take the cable cars unless you have the fares/passports, or else it's 5 bucks/ride. You can also purchase ticket/ride which is $2. I rather get the passports which will save you money.

Have fun!
