What's the easiest, cheapest (and/or easiest versus cheapest) form of public transportation from San Francisco to Monterey? Any opinions on taking Amtrak versus Caltrain to bus? Are there any direct buses between the two cities?

You can take Caltrain to San Jose, then the MST 55 bus to Monterey which runs 3x a day (morning, noon, evening). If you took Amtrak, you'd still take the same bus, but they'd have to shuttle you across the bay to the Capitol Corridor route first, which would take longer.

I've done that trip many times (to Seaside, which is just north of Monterey). The only real options are Caltrain and then the 55, or Greyhound. Greyhound is slower, more expensive, and more crowded. Amtrack works too, but it would make the journey even longer.
