Hi - my husband and I just recently moved in Walnut Creek. I've been trying to find an alternative route to San Francisco so that we can avoid 580. Are there local roads that we can take? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why not take BART?

Unfortunately, for my husband's final destination at work, there is not a BART nearby so he has to drive. I take BART myself and love it.

I live in Walnut Creek too and don't think there is any way to get around the freeway unless he takes hwy 4 to 80 but that increases his commute. Now a days I've noticed less and less people on the hwy, he'll get use to it. Otherwise the earlier he leaves home and work will increase his chances of having a better commute.

We recently moved here from NYC so we're used to taking public transportation everywhere. I'm looking on google maps for an alternative route. What I'm really hoping that he can avoid is the merge on 580 where you have to cross over 4 or so lanes - think it's right before Berkeley exit or close to it(?). Thanks so much for your advice - greatly appreciated.

There are only two ways to drive there. One is over the Bay Bridge. The other way is over the San Mateo Bridge and it will be longer from Walnut Creek. There probably is a Muni connection from Bart to the work location in SF.

Instead of taking 580 continue on 980 to West Grand and take West Grand all the way to 880 just as it reaches the toll plaza. Still a bit busy but it takes you right to the toll plaza and you avoid the maze.

If you get a carpooler in Oakland say on College Av, that will get you into the carpool lane but your husband would have to get off in DT to drop off the carpoolers so I dunno if that will save time.
