They have exchange programs in your countries that you can find host families that have been screened. This is not the appropriate way to find host families.

There are legitimate programs to partner host families with students globally and it's usually coordinated through the high school or university. They don't usually post individually on relocation boards. It's probably the Nigerians. This kinda clued me in:

There's a lot of weirdos out there, especially in California. Asking on a forum when you are both under 18 and the fact you are females is asking for trouble. There are programs around where families have been checked out before hand. Choose wisely though. One of my friends came here from South Korea to a host family and they made her do all the housework and had her take care of their younger children. One of the worst times of her life she said, but then she eventually transferred host families and had one of the best times of her life. I'm sure there are a lot of nice families in these programs, but I think there are some who take advantage of it. You should wait until your 18 and rent a room from an apt for $500-$600 a month.
