In San Diego, we have Voice of San Diego, since the Union Tribune is horrible. Does SF have something similar?

Well, IMO the Chronicle has gone downhill over the years- very tabloidish lately. I think it's pretty much the main newspaper with a San Francisco emphasis (besides the free papers like SFWeekly or Bay Guardian). I've heard that the best paper for good reporting/journalism is the San Jose Mercury News.

Yeah. The Merc is a good alternative to the Chron for state and national news. I actually find the SF Examiner to be a pretty good source of local SF news despite how ghetto it is.

I dont rely on any single paper anymore for news as much as I read news wire services on google news or AP.

Honestly, I don't read the paper much these days... I get my news both online and on TV, which gives me a wider variety of choices. We do carry all the local papers at my library, so I'll browse them here & there - the Chronicle and West County (Contra Costa Times) seem to be most popular with our patrons. I've always liked the San Mateo Times too, but that's probably because it's what I grew up with.

Oh, and I really like the SF Weekly and Guardian, but wouldn't call those "balanced" papers...

I like the Bee. It's my hometown paper. Its the first paper I read before I check out the Examiner or Chronicle. The Bee has great political coverage.

It's funny because the most balanced newspapers in SF are the free ones, in my opinion. Those would be the Examiner, and the SF Daily (though now it's called the Daily call, and covers the peninsula as well, but it's still pretty good.)

I agree that the Chronicle is almost like a tabloid now. The quality has gone waaay down, and they prefer cheezy human interest stories and gimmicky stuff over real news most of the time on the front page. They're also pretty biased towards making SF look good, except when they get a controversial story. For example, They'll report every single shooting and murder in Oakland that appears on the news wire, as well as most other Bay Area cities, but their news on that type of stuff in SF tends to be lacking, even when other news sources report on it. When something more outrageous than usual happens though, then they like to milk it for all that they can.

I don't think there is a new source.

A good old source could be The SF Weekly or Guardian.

The old Chronicle definately was a good source.

The new Chronicle sucks...after Herb Caen died it went down the drain.
