Hello Everyone,

I had a pretty simple question. My girlfriend and I are looking at moving to Palo Alto. I will be working in Palo Alto, but it is most likely she will find an advertising job in San Francisco. While a daily driving commute to SF seems like it would be too much, the schedule listed for the Caltrain's Baby Bullet service seems reasonable. Do the Baby Bullets run on time typically (particularly the 8:02 and 8:42 arrival trains)? Is there a faster or better alternative if we live in Palo? Thanks for any info you can give.

Caltrain runs on time for the most part. But they have a lot of trains on the tracks at the same time during peak hours, so if there's a breakdown or other problem it can sometimes force single-tracking, which results in delays of up to an hour. And no.. there is definitely no better alternative. Caltrain is a gem.

Thank you very much for the reply. How often are there delays? Would you still consider it reliable as a way to get to work in SF? Does everyone else have the same experience with the CalTrain?

Thanks again.

Every time I ride Caltrain (which I do frequently for work), I wish I lived on a Caltrain line instead of BART line--it's just that much better. (BART is also surprisingly on-time for a wannabe-subway system too, though--just not as comfortable for long trips.) Both have problems in that if they stop--they STOP. However, you have to put this into context and remember that this happens *way* more often on the freeways than it does on either BART or Caltrain. (Just try the PA to SF commute at rush hour!) Arguably, Caltrain is a much more reliable way to commute to SF than driving. Most Bay Area traffic reports also cover delays on the major transit systems, so if you wake up one day and hear Caltrain is stopped, you can always go to Plan B for the day.
