Well, gambling is always popular...

Add to it the M8trix Casino in San Jose, which is across the street from Bay 101.

M8trix and Bay 101 aren't casinos in the strictest sense - their license is that of a card club - so they aren't allowed to have slots. The City of San Jose regulates them very strictly in terms of how many tables and what sort of games they're allowed to have.

Oh, thanks. I knew there were legal hoops to jump through, involving casinos, which is what motivated my question.

I did little research and in california, it is not regulated, meaninig it is not lawful but it is not illegal either. Pls correct me if I am wrong. I would be surprised that there is one in San Jose but I am much more interested in going to more loose, freer regulation and more popular places. I have hit one in Marin (I think it is called Craton), that would be nice place to go.

My mother is an avid (and very good!) Hold 'Em player, and her favorite card rooms are Artichoke Joe's and Bay 101. She also used to play at Garden City in San Jose, but I don't think they're really operating anymore.

Note that I said CARD ROOM, which is how they can operate lawfully... if I'm not mistaken, it's the slot machines that officially make it a CASINO instead. Oh, and I also don't know if the ones I just listed are "loose" enough for your taste. My mother does prefer a tightly-moderated but friendly game.

There are two in San Jose, M8trix and Bay 101, and they are licensed as card clubs, not casinos - meaning they cannot run slots. It is legal to run them as card rooms and there is no issue with that. And they're pretty popular, have pretty decent eating, but no one armed bandits.

Casinos (meaning with slot machines) in California are run by local native tribes who are the only entities allowed to own and operate them, since they're sovereign groups. Graton Casino (which you are referring to) in Rohnert Park (actually in Sonoma County) is an Indian casino, and it is pretty nice.

Las Vegas is nearby if the Bay Area can't deliver.
