My grown up son wanted for old times sake to play me chess again in a quiet coffee house. We haven't played for over 20 years! Anyone know a good place? Location preferences: Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco, Other East Bay, Peninsula. Thanks!
Alex

Not east bay but.....Don't try the Sweetwater in Mill Valley.
Try The Depot though....
They allow dogs, jacks players, roller blading, and, yes, chess.

Sort of off topic -- but you've mentioned the Sweetwater before -- I believe the original place has closed, and they are remodeling a new locale around the corner and are trying to secure permits to open soon...

No, they haven't closed, because I was just there, unless it closed in the last few weeks.

Oh, cool!

It's really confusing -- because they were supposed to close and then they didn't and they found a new place, but then they were given a new date to be out...

Haven't been there in a while...

Not in the east bay? this is what im talking about.. typical san fransiscans being silly. as an avid chess player i must say, this is an obsurd statement. here in the east bay we have plenty of places to play chess, though the people wont be your yuppie self rightouse sf types. we get people from all walks of life, blue collar, white collar, black, white, it doesnt matter as long as you play chess. heres a link to the east bay chess club.

East Bay Chess Club

i live in berkeley and frequent this joint all the time. stop by and introuduce yourself!
